Page 20 - Waterloo Chronicle, Wednesday, November 14, 1979 By Rick Campbell Chronicle 8m Editor Despite his club’s modest 1-2 record., University of Waterloo Warrior hockey coach Bob McKillop is a very happy man these days. And that's because even in losing, Warriors have shown the type of determination that has been absent in the past few years. _ Ten days ago Warriors came close to beating York for thee second time this year before bowing 4-2, and last Wednesday went down to the wire before losing 3-1 to McMaster, one of only two remaining undefeated teams in the OUAA. "Every guy goes out there and busts his ass every time he goes over the boards and if we can keep that up we'it be in every game we play." The major reason for Warriors spirited efforts, according to their coach, is the leadership present both on and off the ice. Captain Don Langlois has picked up where he left off last year, and has tallied in each of Warriors games this year. McKillop also points to peo- ple like Paul Foley and goa- lie Rick Nickelchok as ispirational forces. "The leadership is ex- cel1ent, and then you've got rookies like Foley coming in with real good attitudes. and well Nick (Nickelchok). he has an intensely positive at- titude, he never wants to lose," said McKillop. Warriors have a long stretch between 1.3gue games, not seeing action again until one week from tomorrow when they travel to Brock. They also play Windsor before finishing off the pre-Christmas schedule with an [ incredibly-tough skein against York, Toronto, Guelph and Laurentian. The big gap will be bridged somewhat this wee- kend whenWarriors travel to the U.S. to play RPI in a contest that McKillop hopes will see his club flex their offensive muscles more than in their previous games. Warriors counterparts from across the street, the WLU Golden Hawks. will also trek to the States this weekend to play a double- header against Western Mi- chigan University. Hawks recorded their maiden win of the season Sunday in Toronto, dunking Ryerson 8-3 behind the two goal performances of Al Mc- Crae and Don Poulter. Other Hawk goals went to Mitch Edwards. Tony Mar- tindale, Daryl Benjamin and Tim Carscadden. The victory came as wel- come relief for Hawk coach Wayne Gowing, who saw his club flounder to its third straight defeat 7-3 m Guelph last Tuesday "We were definitely struggling, Sunday's game (Ryerson) gave us a chance to break loose." said Gow- ing, "Ryerson isn't exactly a contender but I was pleased that for the first time we played good hockey for 60 minutes and actually picked up the tempo In the third period when we out- shot them 22-6 .. "The guys really went out after that victory. they had a lot to prove and they really put It together It was the type of game where Ryer- son opened the door for us, and we smd 'alright, we'll take It to you . .. Hawks, like Warriors. are Idle In league play until one week tomorrow when they will play host to York Yea men In a game Gowmg refers to as the "story- teller" “If we Witt that one and the one m Windsor after that. we'd be 3-3 coming home against Guelph " would have the makings for a great game." sand the WIA' coach “But that's a long way off, we have to take each game one at a time It still has to come from within ourselves, and as long as It does hopefully we won't have many more of those 60 minutes of los- In: ,.
