Up With People is a nonâ€"profit corporation based in Tucson, Arizona. Right now, five different touring companies are on the road for the organization. Apâ€" proximately 500 young people from 23 different counâ€" tries make up the casts of the touring groups. Cast members range in age from 18 to 26, and all are stuâ€" dents. The show, to take place at the University of Waâ€" terloo‘s Humanities Theatre, will feature 85 voices, a 14â€"piece band and a varied repertoire. _ _ The twoâ€"hour show will be made up of original maâ€" terial, folk songs from many different countries and songs from the 30‘s, 40‘s and 50‘s. â€" o0 During the 11 months castâ€"members spend on the road, they travel an average of 35,000 miles and learn firstâ€"hand about world customs. But becoming a castâ€" member is an achievement in itself, according to Up With People organizer Ken Thompson. Over 7,000 students apply to Up With People every year, but only 500 are accepted after extensive audiâ€" tions. Accepted castâ€"members then pay a $4,800 tuiâ€" tion fee to tour with the group for one year. Castâ€"members may use their Up With People exâ€" perience to pursue a university degree, but Mr. Thompson says few pursue a music career after their oneâ€"year road trip. The concept behind the group is simple. The founders of the Up With People corporation feel that individuals could play an important role in building bridges of understanding among all the peoples of the world. That through music. and dance. young people could reach out to millions and generate hope."
