Students claim landlords are unfair, dishonest, and usually insensitive to the needs of students. Many landlords claim students possess exactly the same negative qualities. C But the dispute here is basically a simple one. People®be they students, senior citizens, or execuâ€" tives‘*are entitled to good quality rental housing at reasonable rates. Open Monday to Fnday 9:00 a.m. to 5 00 p.m â€" There has been a good deal of controversy genâ€" erated over an article which appeared in last week‘s Chronicle on the subject of student housâ€" ing. . Landlord claims UW student accusations unfair Letters to the editor Students tend to be more vulinerable to unscruâ€" pulous landlords because A) they usually need housing quickly and B) they don‘t have much money to spend. There are controls set up by Waterloo‘s two uniâ€" versities to monitor the quality of housing, and we are told these controls are effective to some extent. But according to first hand reports received by a Chronicle reporter from a number of students, conâ€" ditions in many student apartments are far from saâ€" tisfactory. On the other side of this controversy are landâ€" lords. Most, according to our research, are fair and reasonable business people. And some who are fair are victimized by students who aren‘t fair. To the Editor: In an article entitled ‘UW campus refused advertising you noted than Ms Hincks had refused my advertising in the campus centre A partial solution at least is available. If students and their landlords would set aside squabbles and address the problem some progress would no doubt take place. Students and student landlords who are not reâ€" sponsible should be prosecuted within the law, and the punishment should be severe. The problem is ongoing, and there doesn‘t apâ€" pear to be any simple solution. There is a small number of individuals on both sides who seem bent on irresponsibility and perpetuating a conflict that needn‘t exist. ‘It gets curiouser and curiouser‘ With thousands of students coming to Waterloo every year, and the need for good student housing increasing, this is the only sensible course of acâ€" tion. _ When a government is changed by the process of election. it seems to take an eternity for the electors to get an inkling of the new administration‘s methods Dear Sir: For example. we wonder whether senior civil servants who were discharged will be replaced by other persons at similar salaries or whether these "positions"" can be eliminâ€" ated whether the indexation of pensions on the highest levels are maintained at the taxpayers expense â€" whether the sale of Petroâ€"Can is wise and what the general effects of that kind of sale would mean to Canadians outside of Alberâ€" ta We would also like to know more about granting system policies regarding literature. museums and artifacts. art including sculptors etc . expansion of foreign language and the cost plus effects anticipated Maybe our new MP‘s will be kind enough to enlighten us Somewhat like the comment in Alice in Wonderland, Tt gets curiouser and curiouser . â€"Controversy | unnecessary _ onE on IN Alihough one can make many arguments for an action. it Publisher. Sept. 26). This is nonsense. and he knows it. When large numbers of faculty were being hired in years past as the university expanded. hundreds of qualified women applied for jobs but almost none were accepted Some departments hired a few token women. but many reâ€" fused to hire any at all. This is why the University of Waâ€" terloo has one of the worst records of hiring women profesâ€" sors of any university in Canada _. . Sincerely Anne Dagg P‘urthef;r;ore it is my opinion that if these and other stuâ€" dents refrained from intimidating their landlords, the avaiâ€" lable supply of housing might increase to them it“h‘;;r.alvli;'ays been my p(;éltlon. if and when renting a unit. to negotiate a contract in good faith LE Bs s SR s s o e e oo e o dosd niuilabid â€"ndrbinbilieiieeniien C Mr. McGuire had suggested to the Chronicle reporter that she might visit my units for the feature article that apâ€" peared as ‘Students complain of poor housing‘.
