Open Monday to Enday 9:00 a m to 5:00 p.m It appears we don‘t have an arsonist who is sysâ€" tematically razing downtown Waterico after all. . Of the five fires that have destroyed businesses in the downtown core of the city, only two have not been attributed to accidental causes according to the Waterloo Fire Department. Concerned resident claims article misleading To the Editor: As a concerned Christian and area resident, I would like to shed some light on various aspects of the Sept. 25 article regarding the Maranatha ministry. Having come in contact with various recognized (and unrecognized) cults in this area. and having attended several Maranatha gatherings. I wish to point out several significant differences So we‘re left with two â€" probably three â€" major fires that have been attributed to faulty wirâ€" ing or similar causes. If that‘s the case, we don‘t have an arsonist, but we certainly do have a probâ€" lem. Last week‘s fire at Art‘s Recreation Centre and the Garden Restaurant was apparently caused by bad wiring, â€" illegally installed. In view of that fact the fire problem here may be far from over. Many of the buildings in downtown Waterloo are old. Some have been renovated, but many are run down. How many of these buildings are improâ€" perly wired? And how many more accidental fires must strike before serious action is taken? A cult may be defined as a "teaching group or movement which deviates from orthodoxy while claiming to represent the true faith." True Christians, regarding the Bible as the very word of God (II Timothy 3:15â€"17), rightly use this as a standard of orthodoxy. The most significant aspect of the Bible is its teachings of Jesus Christ. who declares,. "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30). Those who do not believe in the Godhood of Jesus. or the authority of the Bible, are not members of His body. nor can they be called Christians They claim to represent the true faith, yet are condemned by the Bible for their falseness (1 Corinthians 12 F) Those who believe in Jesus as God and Lord. rightly bear the name ‘Christian‘. The Bible teaches of the diversity among true believers, comparing this, divers:ty. yet commonness. to that of a body with its various parts (Romans 12 4,5) The Waterioo Fire Department is doing everyâ€" thing in its power to check downtown buildings for wiring and safety. It‘s a large area, and the fire department cannot be expected to keep constant vigil over building owners to make sure they act safely. So in the final analysis, it‘s up to the building owners and/or supervisors to make sure their structures are safe. It is not simply a matter of businesses being destroyed. There are apartments above many businesses, and those apartments have occupants. So far, we‘ve been awfully lucky no one has been injured or killed in a fire. The fire department is doing its part to keep downtown Waterloo safe. But if everyone conâ€" cerned doesn‘t do the same, the efforts of the fire prevention officers and the firefighters may well be in vain. Letters to the editor The Christian church, divided as it is into many large and small parts (including Maranatha), is yet bound together by a common faith in. and worship of. Jesus Christ as Lord and God. A cult,. though counterfeiting much of this. can never believe in, nor teach of, Jesus as Lord and God. This devianâ€" ce from orthodoxy exposes them The Bible also teaches that those outside of the faith in Christ Jesus, because of a lack in spiritual discernment, are The problem remains published every Wednesday by Fairway Press, a division of Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo Record Ltd~. owner subscriptions: $14 a year in Canada $16 a year in United States and Foreign Countries 225 Fairway Rd. I believe this applies to the statements of University of Waterloo student president Mark McGuire. Among true and sincere Christians, the role of Maranatha is understood and welcomed. These people are attempting to present a sincere and viable Christian alternative to the {false religions and secular humanism rampant on the uniâ€" versity campus. As a passive Christian attending U W. seâ€" veral vears ago. 1 saw beliefs in God, the Bible, and Judeoâ€" Waterloo residents complain of allâ€"night party Dear Editor: We would like to submit the following and we would further like to inform you that my husband and 1 as well as the decent people in our neighborhood are encountering the same kind of a problem as the people on Regina St. and in this regard we would refer to your article published on the front page of the Waterloo Chronicle about two weeks ago BEND THE WILLOW WHILE IT‘S GREEN Whatever is happening in Waterioo It‘s going to wreck and ruins, The decent folks don‘t stand a chance To correct the young one‘s doing They think they own the neighborhood And the police just tell them to be good But what‘s the point if that‘s all they do When the neighbors can tell them the same thing too We ask you, what folks like us can do To bring decency back to Waterloo Our problem concerns the occupants of the property munâ€" icipally known as 103 Willow Street and a party held there on Saturday. Sept. 29. 1979 This is the second party of its kind on our street this year. the first one having been held at 99 Willow Street by two of the same people. one of whom purâ€" Comment Christian morals and doctrines openly ridiculed and mocked for no reason, by contemptuous and vain professors in various classes 1 attended. S For too long this oneâ€"sided inequity has existed. 1 heartalâ€" ly endorse the work of Maranatha ministries, and encourage other Christians to proclaim to this troubled world, the peace with God that faith in Jesus Christ can bring, a peace which ‘‘surpasses all comprehension‘" (Philippians 4:7). Yours sincerely, Donald Drews, Kitcheger. chased 103 Willow Street approximately two weeks ago We have nothing against anyone having a party in their own house but we do object to the fact that 200 or more people attend, resulting in loud music and rowdiness until 5:30 a m. as well as broken bottles and people all over their lawn and neighboring properties ; ‘ They parked their cars just anywhere and even mw folk‘s driveways. They were also urinating all over Tthe place Three complaints were made to the police. one by us and a neighbor just across the street. but not before my husâ€" band personally phoned next door and asked them to remove the people from outside the front of the house as our little one was awake and crying When the police arrived they merely told them (the parâ€" tiers) to keep it quiet. stay in the house and don‘t break beer botties. This made no difference to them so we had to put up with all this until 5. 30 in the morming * We never had any problems in our neighborhood until this lot moved in and we feel surely someone can help us curb this kind of problem before it gets out of hand We have p'ersonally delivered on today‘s date (Tuesday ) a letter to Mayor Marjorie Carroll in the form of a petition (Continued on page 8)
