.‘ ‘ Page 12 â€" Watertoo Chripnicle, Wednesday, October 3. 1979 SportWaterl By Rick Campbell Chronicle Sports Editor One of the most overâ€" worked cliches in sport is the expression "got the job done"‘. But that‘s exactly what Waterloo Siskins did last weekend as they opened their Midwestern Ontario Junior B hockey schedule with a pair of wins. In Friday‘s lidlifter in Owen Sound, Siskins were the antithesis of the club that concluded its exhibition schedule with a 10â€"1 win over Elmira Wednesday as they struggld to a 746 victory. Sunday at Waterloo Arena, Cambridge Shamrocks fell 4â€"3 to the locals but not before givâ€" ing ample notice they will not be the league doormats they were last year when they won only two games Both Siskin coach Jack Egers _ and _ general manager Roger Freeâ€" born were underwheimed to say the least about Friâ€" day‘s effort, but were soâ€" mewhat more satisfied with the win Sunday "‘"I attribute Friday‘s performance to the fact a lot of our kids had no preâ€" vious jumior experience, and â€" manvy_ of _ them weren‘t used to travellâ€" ing that far to play." said & emmeinne on io dn t 2. 8 8 EWe an Hag a o 4 > . Any ardent Twin City hockey fans would recognize some names on this year‘s Siskins roster as coming from last year‘s Renegade championship unitâ€"and believe it. it‘s no coincidence We took a long look at Grand River‘s program and estimated that they had about seven really topnotch players," said incoming Siskins general manager Roger Freeborn during the first intermission of Sunâ€" day‘s home opener against Cambridge Shamrocks. ‘""And since two or three of them are now going to university in Waterloo. they are free players for us So we invited several out to camp this year and we‘ve got four out there tonight that we think will really help the club The four involved are defenseman Dwayne Thacker. defensemanâ€"right winger Brad King and centres Brad Lund and Mike Mader Mader, perhaps the most celebrated of the four because of his flashy Freeborn. ‘"They were definitely jittery out there. They couldn‘t skate at all, it was mass chaos. But as we told them on the way home, anytime you can play that bad and still come out a winner, you‘ve got to have something going for you."‘ . Dana Saunders and gentle John _ Conrad shared the limelight for Waterloo Friday. Saunders potted three goals and Conrad, selectâ€" ed by Egers to start over veterans Dave Barrett and Ed Takamatsu, jusâ€" tified the move by thâ€" warting Kings time and again until his club got it together to tally the winâ€" ner with four minutes to go Sunday Siskins apâ€" peared to have the conâ€" test well in hand with a 3â€" 1 lead in the second period. but some unâ€" necessary belligerence left them short for much of the rest of the contest. Not only did it allow Shamrocks to tie by the midâ€"point of the third, it also scrambled Egers‘ plan to establish set units ‘‘There‘s no_ doubt we‘ve got the potential to score goals but some of those penalties were so stupid. . totally unnecesâ€" sary. . said the Wateloo coach. "I was really enâ€" couraged with the (Brad) Lund (Craig) Frank and (Brad)> King line. but with Frank and King being used on the point and to kill penalties, they weren‘t together as much as 1‘d like to see them _ Brad Schnurr gave Waâ€" terioo a 1â€"0 first period lead, but that score was negated when Mike Pauze beat Takamatsu style and muchâ€"publicized jump from the Renegades to Stratford Cullitons late in the season last year, was obtained by the Waterioo club after a release was secured from Stratford and waivers were granted by the Kitchener Ranger B‘s. Siskins now have eight players on their roster who came to the club from local high schools. Robust deâ€" fenceman Wilf Rellinger. this year‘s captain, is back on the blueline. Craig Frank, at least for the beginning of the season, will see plenty of action at left wing and on the blueline. Defenceman John O‘ Donoghue joins the club from Forest Heights and high school product John Conrad was a pleasant surprise in goal during the training camp and drew the starting assignment in Owen Sound Friday based on those efforts He was strong in his debut too, foiling Kings on several glittering opportunities and generally holding the shaky Siskins in the game as they posted a 7â€"6 win But coach Jack Egers indicated he plans to go with three goalies, the others being returnees Dave Barâ€" rett and Ed Takamatsu for at least a month ‘‘The teturning goalies came to training camp knowing they didn‘t have a great year last year. but to their credit they‘ve both had strong camps," said Freeborn. "A major factor with Conrad is that he has Brad Schnurr, shown here setting to shoot Sunday night against Cambridge Shamrock goalie Scott Walker, is a bonus returnee to Waterioo Siskins lineup this year. Schnurr scored a goal as Waterloo upped its record to 2â€"0 with a 4â€"3 win over Rocks. on a breakway midway through the period as he slipped the puck through the Waterloo goalie‘s legs. But possibly the killer tame when Saunders scored his fourth of the year on a reâ€" bound at 19 59 Craig Frank made it 3â€" 1 on a powerplay early in the second but goals by Mike Gibson and Rick Stayner drew the visitors ‘Chronicle Sports Line â€" > â€"~~ 886â€"2830 . even before Roy Russell jammed the winner home from the right edge of the crease at 1522 of the final frame another year to é(;. but we‘ll stick with three until one of them plays himself{ out of a position. Also returning to Siskins defence this year are Tom Abbott and Eric Calder, products of the local system who joined the club midway through last year. With King and Frank able to play the blueline when needed Cambridge pulled goaâ€" lie Scott Walker in the waning moments but Sisâ€" kins. as they did in Owen Sound Friday. didn‘t allow Shamrocks even a remote opportunity to tie andvincoming university student Andy Watson al versatile, the club should be able to juggle around find the right combinations. _ A big bonus up front is the return of centre Brad Schnurr, who reunites with linemates Dana Saunders and Grant Musselman to form Siskins most potent troika. Schnurr. drafted last year by Kitchener Rangers. has apparently decided to pass up Major junior A hockey for a chance at a hockey scholarship in the United States ‘"There‘s no question the Schnurr line and Rellinger and Abbott will carry us until the others get the feel of the league,"" said Freeborn Speedster Roy Russell has been slotted at left wing with Mader to not only make for a deadly line comâ€" bination but the two also kill penalties with tenacious forechecking Mike Coppolino will see left wing action while the It‘s going to take some time., no doubt about that." said Egers "And right now I‘m tryâ€" ing to go with four lines which is tough on the kids, especially the o‘ who need the ice time NOTES: Siskins ven: ture to New Hamburg Friday for an 8 p m game and then return home Sunday to face leaâ€" gue champion Stratford Cullitons Sunday at 7. 30 (Continued on page 20)
