Because with only five reâ€" turning players from last year‘s Twin City semiâ€" finalist, the time to start planning is not after Labor Day. ‘‘We‘ve had really good assistance from our public school physed departâ€" ments," said WCI head coach Darv Easton. ‘*We made a concentrated effort all summer writing letters to potential players and parents. The public schools gave us lists of names of those showing a desire to play for our team, and our job was to inform the parents and players of our program and its aims." Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeieeeeeeeeeeiet . e ORBNROENE WR Ne Many Waterloo Vikings are entering their first season of competitive tackle football this year. Friday the linemen took turns battering this dummy as the squad prepares to open Friday at home against Glenview Park. After the 1977 season, WCI decided that because of an inability to field a competiâ€" tive senior football team, they would drop senior and move into junior after a fiveâ€"year absence and atâ€" tempt to reâ€"build a foundaâ€" tion for the _ onceâ€" powerhouse school. The junâ€" _‘79Vikings face big test ior program, implemented by the Students Council in cooperation with the physed staff, is on the second of its intended two year focus. "At the conclusion of this year we (SC and physed staff) will get together and discuss the success of the plan,‘‘ said Easton. If our evaluation is encouraging, we will likely reâ€"enter senâ€" ior next year and also field a jupior club. Based on last year‘s performance, I‘d say there is a good probability we will have a senior club next year."‘ _ Last year, WCI was 2â€"2â€"1 in regular season play, went on to beat KCI in a quarterâ€" final but then lost to tradiâ€" tionallyâ€"strong St. Jerome‘s in the semis. "But our good showing last year has even helped this vear,"‘ said Easton "Our success has brought more kids out. Last year we had maybe 30 players on a good day, but this year we already have 50 signed and dressed."‘ Returning to the Viking fold are three offensive players and two on defense. Quarterback Phil Israel will be back to guide the rookie offense, along with returâ€" nees lan MacLean at end and lineman Rob Lutz. On defense. the only familiar KW 6y3 6 (ce)c ve‘/ GET FIT!
