Because of brutal press coverage, few people probably know that the Interâ€"County Junior Baseball League allâ€"star team overcame great adversity to win the Labatt‘s Invitaâ€" tional Junior tournament in Thorold. lt the time the team was announced, it seemed absurd t only two members of the powerhouse leagueâ€"leading Waterloo Expos were on the first squad.. It appeared on the surface that the other junior entries, resentful of Waterloo‘s domination, were conspiring to keep the notâ€"soâ€"wellâ€"liked Expos off the dream teamâ€"and Expo president and general manager Merle (Champ) Glassford pulled no punches in confirming what he believed to be those exact circumstancesâ€" # 7However. to evéry coin there are two sides, and to every story two sides, and yesterday league commissioner Art Fach graciously voiced his view of the week of turmoil. The crux of the controversy circulated around the omisâ€" sion of Dan Collison, Rick Williams and Jim Taylor from the allâ€"star list. All three of those Expos are superbly gifted players and have excelled in junior competition. But accordâ€" ing to Fach, they were not omitted. ~ Before the team was picked, ballots were mailed out to each team asking them to name players on their roster to each position, plus one utility player. Then every team was iven a copy of every other team and asked to vote for yers based on a 5â€"3â€"1 point tally for first, second and third ice. Managers were not allowed to vote for their own players, but were asked to select based on what they had seen of the opposition this year. Gary Stockdale of Brantford, who received the most votes as field manager, was then asked to pick a coaching staff to select the remainder of the team for a substitution listâ€"and on that list were Dan Collison, Jim Taylor, Rick Williams, Mike Arundel. and Dunc MacDonald of the Expos. ‘‘*Obviously everyone is asking why Dan Collison was not on the first team, but they don‘t realize that he didn‘t show much in junior until this last flourish. The other guy (Brantâ€" ford‘s Romeo Shannelly) was regarded as a better fielder. We knew we had a lot of bats, we needed the pitching and fielding.‘‘ ‘‘Those plavers were not chosen as fillâ€"ins, but as players to complement the starting nine,"‘ said Fach in a telephone interview from his Preston home. "The voting for nearly every position was very close and often only a hairâ€"breadth separated a first allâ€"star from a substitute. It was their (Expos) choice not to attend. Speaiing of pitching, Fach was asked the rationale behind picking Stratford‘s Roger Kahle as leftâ€"handed pitcher when he hadn‘t pitched one game of junior all year. ‘"Kahle has an outstanding past record in this league and most managers know what he can do whereas they hadn‘t seen what (Rick Williams) could do. He (Kahle) told us he would pitch one game for us, and like I said we needed the pitching in a tournament like that, but unfortunately he backed out in the end ° But if the management was so worried about pitching. why wasn‘t former Expo Scott Hannah allowed to play? nnah. who left the club for personal reasons several .ks ago. was voted to the team and apparently was more n willing to pitch for the allâ€"star unit "I had a talk with Scott‘s dad who told me Scott wanted to play but I didn‘t want to get into that situation myself. 1 left And a good deal of that adversity was created in this secâ€" It‘s Time C}fl To Plant ~=*=~>== POTTED TREES . and SHRUBS We have a fine selection of potted trees and shrubs in stock and ready for summer planting. But Fach said that at the beginning of the year, Listowel organizers, who had already volunteered to stage the allâ€"star game, asked to become inâ€" volved with the Thorold tournament ‘"It was the logical thing that they (Listowel) should do both," said Fach. ‘"One of their few stipulations was that at least two Listowel players be chosen for the league allâ€"star game Monday night‘"‘ > _ The game was held in Listowel not to boost popularity necessarily, but because simply, they volunteeréd to stage it when no one else would. The club lost to Stratford Hillers 8â€"0. s **We thought about the allâ€"stars playing Waterloo (Expos) but the chances were about four or five of the starting allâ€" stars would be Waterloo players, so how could the allâ€"stars get their best team together? Stratford‘s manager Keith Aitcheson volunteered the Stratford seniors so that‘s who played." â€" According to the commissioner, the Iâ€"C stars put on a gritty performance in Thorold. They were ranked fourth behind Windsor, Toronto and tourney favorite Niagara Falls but came on to defeat Toronto 19â€"15 in extra innings in the championship game. "They were all for each other, guys like Shannelly played with injuries they wanted to play so bad and how can you overlook the pitching of guys like Jeff Pasher who pitched two games for us. All the senior teams pitched in to help us except Waterloo and Cambridge. Everyone was aware of the situation well before hand and the senior clubs were all asked to cooperate wherever possible. As it was. our best team wasn‘t there, but we still won." And therein, I feel, lies the whole problem. The Iâ€"C allâ€"stars were the best, but the best of the Iâ€"C weren‘t allâ€"stars. Confused?
