SportWaterloo Page 10 â€" Waterioo Chronicle, Wednesday, July 25, 1979 By Rick Campbell Chronicle Sports Editor The top teams in the Interâ€"City Fastâ€" ball League are assuming a peculiar posture these days. It‘s called looking over your shoulder. And the reason is because of the blazâ€" ing entrance Waterloo Team Sport junâ€" iors have made in the senior loop. On July 12, Sports made their debut in the IFL after assuming the North Waâ€" terloo franchise and its unenviable 1â€"6 record. Ten days later, they were 7â€"7 after winning five of their first six starts, and even Sport manager Joe Siopiolosz 1s surprised by the jackrabbit start. "Success has come rather quickly," he understated yesterday. "All I can say is that the guys wanted to prove to themâ€" selves they could play in this league. and so far they‘ve done quite nicely. But things will get tougher from here. Sports latest conquests include three wins over the hapless Stratford Merâ€" chants. Waterloo swept a doubleheader in the Festival City Sunday 5â€"2 and 10â€"3 after ekeing out a 2â€"0 decision over the same squad in Sports home opener in St Clements Friday. Thursday they shocked Cambridge Gores 3â€"0 right in Galt and Tuesday thumped Waterdown 8â€"4 But depite all those wins, Siopiolosz indicated Sports first win over Waterloo CHYM‘rs was the key "I don‘t think teams have underes timated us, especially teams like Cam bridge who know what guys we have Look at Grimsby, they‘re a junior team and they‘re holding their own too But the win over the CHYM‘rs turned the tables for us If we had lost that one this might be a whole different story _ Sports only loss came in their second game. a 3â€"1 heartbreaker to the league leading Guelph Ingrams But even in that contest. Waterloo was in it right to the very end and with a couple of better bounces. could have shocked the aweâ€" some Ingram unit "We‘ve been hitting the ball. the guys were worried initially about being able to hit the pitching but games like the Stratford one really help their confidenâ€" Here they come.... the boys are really rolling Guelph Woodstock Waterloo Cambridge Team Sport Grimsby Waterdo wn Stratford INTERâ€"CITY FASTBALL LEAGUE (not including Tuesday games) ce,"" said Siopiolosz. ‘"But the real key is our defense, we‘ve made a lot of big plays in the field. The addition of seniors John (Dietrich) and Jake (Miller) has really helped too, they‘ve provided us with a steadying influence."‘ The upstart Juniors cannot help but be thrilled with the performance of pitcher Whitey Lobsinger, who has won four straight IFL games. After Waterloo he dumped Waterdown with late relief from Dietrich, shut out Cambridge on four harmless singles without allowing a runner past second and struck out 12 in Stratford Sunday with another fourâ€"hitâ€" ter. Continued efforts will be mandatory though as Sports other junior hurler Dave Dautner has been plagued with a bothersome groin injury. Because of the squads success, Siopioâ€" losz said that initial aspirations of just making the playoffs have been changed somewhat. ‘"We‘d like to get as high as fifth so we wouldn‘t have to play Guelph right away in the playoffs,."‘ he said. ‘‘Naturally we‘re aiming for as high a finish as we can, but the kids are really looking forâ€" ward to playing Grimsby to see how we can make out against them .‘ Siopiolosz was right on in stating that things do not get any easier for his club from here on. They have an enormous schedule packed tightly into several weeks and began a gruesome skein last night facing Guelph at Bridgeport. Thursday they travel to Woodstock to play secondâ€"place Twins and Friday are back home at St. Clements against Camâ€" bridge. who will no doubt be out for reâ€" venge ‘‘We‘ve played well to this point, but I guess we‘ll find out this week how good we really are." said the Sport boss. "I think a great deal of our success deâ€" pends on pride. We were really disapâ€" pointed that we didn‘t go farther in the junior eliminations because I think we‘re a lot better team than we showed Doing well in this league would sort of make up for it _ And don‘t think the other IFL teams don‘t know that. as they peer over their shoulders at the rumble in the backâ€" ground 19 12 11 11 10 11 10 20 10 Pot .909 .524 .500 476 .933 11 18 1/2 5 1/2 7 1/2 8 1 /2 GBL Dave Dautner (above) throws the first pitch during Waterloo Team Sports home opener last Friday in St. Clements, while in the bottom of the first Sport shortshop Dana Saunders lays down a sacrifice bunt against Stratford.
