ask“; Merchants and members of the downtown im- provement board in Kitchener have a good idea that their counterparts in Water1po_should try. The procedure, according to an article in Tues- day's Kitchener-Waterloo Record, it goes like this. Merchants are distributing slips of paper to shoppers and downtown core workers, asking "Do you feel that there is adequate parking in Kitchener's downtown core? ,, When the survey is complete, the merchants will present them to Kitchener city council in an effort to convince the City that more parking is necessary. Waterloo council is already aware of the park- ing problem in our downtown core. But a similar - or identical - survey taken by downtown mer- chants here might give a better idea of how serious the problem is. They're conduciing a survey of shoppers, try ing to get a concensus on the availability of park- ing in our neighboring city’s downtowr} gore. " Presently, the City of Waterloo is applying for a grant to study the parking situation and the downtown core in general, and we wouldn't sug- gest that this survey should take the place of that study. Hopefully, the proposed study will provide a detailed overview of the parking situation and other problems plaguing 'our downtown area. But it will take time for the City to get appro- val for the grant, and the survey could be un- dertaken and completed in the meantime.
