I still believe that those sports represent the meat and poâ€" tatoes of our media coverage, but in the past two weeks I‘ve fiafl what could*best be termed an ‘"awareness‘" you name offâ€"hand the sports I‘ve covered in the past two weeks on these pages? Don‘t feel bad, I couldn‘t either 2tillnopped‘atamdli¢htatWeherMUneolnlatSntur- y. â€" I had just come from covering the opening game of the Youth Basketball Association program at the Waterloo Y and as I sat at the light I thought to myself it had been so refreshing covering a unique sport like YBA. Contrary to my usual pattern, I continued thinking. It was also a pleasure covering bowling. And ringette. And field hockey. And tennis. And gymnastics. And track and field. In the past two weeks I have not actively covered one iota of hockey, baseball or football. And the only basketball was YBA, which has ideals separating it from the high school or university brand of ball in the area. _ Well, as the story goes, a few more kids joined the club and the way Grinbergs made it sound, I had saved his life or something. Not so, it was simply a case of someone doing his job for someone who doesn‘t have to, yet chooses to, do an even greater job. * Like so many rookie media types, I once believed that _ It‘s people like WCI girls gymnastics coach Kaarina Tuliâ€" sport revolved around baseball, football, hockey and basketâ€" salo, who felt almost embarrassed to tell me she h a d bail. ~ coached that team to 12 straight Twin City titles. ‘‘Talk Just as the year had four seasons, it also had four sports, M%fi.&q’nhmfihdfluafl&qm all overlapping and affording the fan a continuous sypply of all the for it," she said. But late in the season it struck me funny that every time I was there, so was Pete. Either coaching, taking pictures, being goal judge, statisâ€" tician or whatever. The last puck had barely been fished out of the net this spring when Pete took up where he left off last fall as coach of the Waterloo division of the Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo Minor Track and Field Club. Unfortunately, registrations were slow this year and Pete asked me if I could publicize the club. I felt it was the least I could do for a Waterloo sports organization, and a person who was giving so much of his time to help the kids of our city. As if he doesn‘t have enough to do, Grinbergs also coaches a YBA team, and gets just as big a kick out of watching the kids as they get by playing. Unlike some of these other people, Debbie is paid to do her job and she does it very well. She is the perfect â€"model for this program which goes beyand the realm of competitive sport to teach values essential to human existence.
