Many of the players that perform each year in the coâ€" lours of the Waterloo Siskins are graduates of the high [quality Waterloo â€" Minor Hockey Association. The success of the Junior B club over the years is partly the result of the good workâ€" ing agreement and coâ€"operaâ€" tion between the minor body and the junior franchise. This year‘s edition of the Siskins is no exception, and a prime example of a player developing into a junior perâ€" former from his play in minor ranks is Steve Graf. Steve progressed through Waterloo Minor hockey ranks at the Allâ€"Star level from minor peewee to Juâ€" venile and with each year of competition became a more skilled performer. Last year upon graduating from midâ€" get competition, Steve atâ€" tended the Siskin tryout camp, but the number of exâ€" perienced returning players relegated Steve into being one of the last cuts from the team. Accordingly. Steve spent last season as a member of the Waterloo Major juvenile team. Steve By John Thompson This season has been a trying season for Steve. Although he has been relaâ€" tively injury free throughout his hockey career, partially torn knee ligaments forced Steve out of the lineup for about ten games. Despite that loss. he has been able to be an asset to the team, and latest stats have Steve pegged with eight goals and 14 assists. The 5011 centre has proven that he can score in the past. and the highlight of his minor hockey days was his copping the Most UP _ ranks Siskin Spotlight Graf: 621 KING WEST, KITCHENERâ€"745â€"9495 keitu rupreNTHAL RATZâ€"BECHTEL FUNERAL, HOME & CHAPEL Conv venient Parking, entering Wellington or King Street Last year Steve was emâ€" ployed at Uniroyal. which necessitated shift work. In late summer. with the proâ€" spects of playing for the Sisâ€" kins unfolding before him, Steve changed jobs, and is now employed at Allâ€" Weather Insulation in Kitchener. The regular day shift allows him the time to fulfill his responsibilities to the busy Siskin schedule. Valuable Player award as a minor bantam when he scored 86 goals in only 63 games. It was a year of great improvement in Steve‘s basic hockey skills, and much credit is due to his coach at that time, George Blake. Outside of hockey, Steve enjoys football, and during his high school days at Waâ€" terloo Collegiate, he was a force to be reckoned with on the gridiron. As noted, his hockey career has not been accident prone. however, in football Steve suffered a broken shoulder, an indicaâ€" tor that when the going gets rough, Steve likes the acâ€" tion. Memories of being part of the Waterloo Peewees that captured the Hespeler Olympics tournament a few years ago are sweet to Steve, and he would like nothing better that the Sisâ€" kins emerging as Midwesâ€" tern Champions for the curâ€" rent playoffs. He feels that the Siskins have a pretty good chance of upsetting Stratford, and the recent victory over the rival Culliâ€" tons has given the team conâ€" fidence. In the other semiâ€" final series, Steve stated that "If Elmira plays their usual physical game,. they STEVE GRAF .... up and down Bike race Sunday should have no problems. Hopefully, it will end up as a Waterlooâ€"Elmiraâ€" league final." Steve, at age 18, is the youngest of eight children of Mrs. Anna Graf. Older brothers John, an employee of MTD Products, David, with O‘Brien Contracting and Ernie, currently travellâ€" ing in Greece, balance the household that also includes four sisters, all of whom are married, Margaret and Barâ€" bara of Kitchener, Claire of Guelph and Doris of Brantâ€" ford.
