Loud Talk In Front Of Hotel Cost Waterloo Man ‘Ton Spot' Verdun Dahmer, David St., Waterlo, was fined $10 and costs when he was convicted in police court here on Tuesday of disorderly conduct. . Loud talk outside a local hotel after the beverage rooms had closed on Hallowe'en night resulted in the conviction and fine. A charge of resisting arrest was withdrawn. Constable Ed Rieck testified he heard shouting and loud noise outside the City Hotel about 12:45 a.m. on Nov. 1. He said he walked up to the group and told the men and their wives to move on. Dahmer, he said, refused. He quoted Dahmer as saying he was a taxpayer and helped to pay the policeman's wages. After warning him three or four times Rieck placed him under arrest. Two women denied they had talked loudly. Clifford Whitney, counsel for the accused, maintained they had a perfect right to stand outside the hotel. It was Hallowe'en night and those in the group were dressed in cos- tume. It would irk anyone to be told to move, he said. Approve New Lights For Waterloo Streets A specific type of lighting for residential and business streets in Waterloo appears to be settled. The co-ordinating committee, consisting of the mayor, city engineer, chairman of the P.U.C. and chairman of the fire and light committee, recommended to the fire and light committee of council that sphero lights (junior type) be planned on residential and secondary streets and that sphero lights (senior) be erected on business streets and at main thoroughfares. There was one consolation, however. The streets got a good washing. The letter points out that raw wool prices are now at "an historic peak", due largely to world shortages and world demand in which Canada is an insignificant factor. Streets Get Good Bath Monday Night After Explosion Waterloo fire department was called out to wash King, a section of Erb and Albert Streets Monday night when a 1500- gallon tank of fermenting juice, being hauled to Seagram's Distillery, blew up near the King St, railway tracks. The grape juice blew the head off the tank, shook the truck and trailer on which it was hauled, and splattered the area. Driver David Crole, of St. Catharines, who stepped out of his cab to see what happened, was also drenched. Mr. Crole was hauling the juice from Jordan Wineries to Seagram's here. After the explosion, he drove to the police station. Price of Men's Suits Soon to be Increased From $5 - $10 Toronto - The National Council of Clothing Manufacturers of Canada said at a recent meeting that the prices of men's suits will be increased from $5 to $10 each. In a letter to 6,250 retailers, the council says this boost is for the cost of material only and does not include rises which may result from higher costs of labor, linings and trimmings, these news happenings were taken directly from the Wa- terloo Chronicle, 1950. Broken Key Seals Prisoner in Waterloo Jail A drunk locked up in the local police cell last Friday night had a tough time getting out on Saturday morning and it wasn't for a lack of money. Saturday morning Police Chief Moreau and Sgt. Lloyd Otto tried to take off the door but had no luck. The committee asked that the present orders for lights be altered to agree with the proposal. The recommendation was approved by council. Sunday Sports Waterloo Group Against. Kitchener For " A stand against Sunday sports has been taken by the 50-50 club of First United Church, Waterloo. ' A resolution condemning commercialized Sunday Sport was passed unanimously at a meeting of the club held Satur- day night. The motion followed a lively discussion in which it was emphasized that the voting on Dec. 4 will decide only whether paid admissions and remuneration for players on Sunday will be allowed. It was pointed out that the Lord's Day Act of Canada now permits sports on Sunday on a non-commercial basis. Finally Clemmer's Welding and Repair Shop was called. Using a big chisel, the repairman forced the lock open short- ly before ll a.m. Saturday morning. This photo, taken in 1867, is part of the Waterloo Music Co. Ltd. collection.
