It was an upâ€"andâ€"down weekend for the Waterloo SisRins in Midwestern Jun ior "B" hockey action. The only point salvaged in three contests was courtesy of a 2â€" 2 deadlock with New Hamâ€" burg Hahns on Saturday night. The tie was sandâ€" wiched between losses to Hespeler (54 on Thursday) and: Elmira (4â€"2 on Sunday). Despite the loss to the leaâ€" gueâ€"leading Sugar Kings Sunday evening, the play of the Siskins was improved over recent outings and showed promise for future encounters. Waterloo Genâ€" eral Manager Peter Brill was mildly satisfied with the team‘s performance in the Eimira game, but conâ€" ceded that the team does need help if it hopes to eleâ€" vate its position in the seven team loop. Currently the Siskins share fourth spot with the Kitchener Ranger B‘s, with identical 2â€"4â€"1 reâ€" cords. Sunday‘s game featured stellar netminding by both Ed Takamatsu of Waterloo and Martin Quincey of the Sugar Kings. Elmira held a slight shooting edge overall of 43â€"41. However, a pair of goals by diminutive Kent Norman from Palmerston, and singles by Walkerton native Jamie Zippel from his blueline position and Dave Adlys of Waterloo, an earlier Siskin cut, provided the Sugar Kings with the ofâ€" fense required for the 4â€"2 victory. Siskins started quickly, with former Owen Sound winger Fred McConnell liftâ€" ing Waterloo into a 1â€"0 lead with just 48 seconds elapsed in the game. However, poâ€" werplay goals by Norman at 3:57 and Zippel at 18:21 leapâ€" frogged the Sugar Kings into a 2â€"1 lead by the end of the first stanza. Adlys‘ goal upped the margin to 3â€"1 late in the second period with both teams scoring a single in the third. Siskin mentor Jack Egers lifted Takamatsu from the nets with 53 seconds remainâ€" Howard Totzke (left) presents Frank Kossuth with a $100â€"bill after he bowled a perfect game October 11. By John Thompson Siskins bow to Elmira â€" slip to fourth spot ing in the game, but his teammates were unable to muster sufficient offense to stage a lateâ€"game rally. The Elmira victory mainâ€" tained the Sugar Kings‘ slim lead over rival Stratford Cullitons for top spot in the league. Elmira‘s only bleâ€" mish on the young season was a 6â€"5 loss to Stratford on Friday evening, while the Cullitons have yet to suffer a loss while posting four vicâ€" tories and a tie. The top team after twelve league games will carry the laurels of the Midwestern League into the Ontario Winter games, and Elmira is giving fair warning that Stratford will not be able to simply skate unopposed to the winter tourney. The Sugar Kings early season success may be surâ€" prising to many fans. Norm Clement, Elimira‘s General Manager disagrees, and stated that "we felt we had the makings of a good team this year. We definitely have our eye on first place and a berth in the Winter games."‘ â€" In Saturday‘s game, Sisâ€" kins complemented goalkeeâ€" per Dave Barrett‘s solid play just sufficiently enough, to garner the tie. While Barâ€" rett performed steadily, only Grant Musselman and Brad Schnurr were lamâ€" plighters for Waterloo, and the balance of the team was kept off the scoresheet. Sisâ€" kins led 2â€"1 late in the game. however, finally Rick Cressâ€" man of New Hamburg broke through to tie the game. Dave Schroeder was the other Hahn marksman. Genâ€" erally, it was a lacklustre affair, and only fitting that both teams emerged with a single point, neither squad‘s performance worthy of a mark in the win column.
