I like being a minister, pastor, priest! I enjoy my work! I find it hard to understand why most people wouldn‘t want my vocation. I am reminded of a comment that set me thinking. It still haunts me. I was with a group of leaders in a church. We were talking about recruiting students for the Christian ministry. I had pointed out that most people becoming minâ€" isters or priests did so because their mothers or pastors had suggested it to them. Then, with the best intention, I added: ‘"‘But I think most parents are the road block. They don‘t want their children to become pastors, ministers, priests." There was a sudden restlessness in the group. They chalâ€" lenged my statement. Their reply bears considerable thought. "Pastor, we do want our sons and daughters to become pastors and ministers. But if they do, we would feel sorry for them." ‘"When you‘re as great as I am, it‘s hard to be humble", and "I am the greatest. You are next" are a couple of the phrases that appear on cards or buttons that adorn the wall in my church study. There are others. ‘"World‘s greatest authority"‘, ‘"Tell it like it is", ‘"Break habits, not people‘", ‘‘Hang in there"". My friends have a good sense of humor‘ The odd one may have landed there by my own hand. I also tacked up a couple of other morale boosters that were scribbled on notepaper by young children. They drew pictures with them during worship and handed them to me as they were leaving. I treasure them. "I think you are a good pastor"‘, and "Thank you for having a nice church." I also find it delightful when a youngster innocently says to his parents: ‘‘When is Jesus coming to visit our house again 2nd Quarter â€" No Score CRS â€" RANKINGS 1. Lakeshore 2. Queensmount 3. But I‘m not sorry I chose life as a Christian pastor. Like people in every other profession, there are days and there are days! However, to be Christian means to live it every moment of your life whether serving as a minister or in any other profession!!! There is no difference‘! There is no escaping "being reliâ€" gious‘‘. Now, of course, I know what a minister does. And I would like to hasten to add, ‘‘Don‘t feel sorry for me!‘‘ I chose this calling, though only after having been chosen for it! In one sense, I fell into it because I had done little planning for the future. My grade 8 teacher wanted me to be a medical docâ€" tor. My tests said I would make a good teacher, good carâ€" penter, good contractor, good farmer. My mother and my pastor had suggested, ‘"Try the Christian ministry." The construction company for which I had worked offered me the lucrative position of general superintendent the day I finished my university. I am still wondering why someone would feel sorry for a minister. Does that phrase mean: 1) sorry because minisâ€" ters are targets of criticism by everyone who has anything to do with the church? 2) sorry because of the often lower financial return? 3) sorry because they are on call day and night every day of the week? 4) sorry because they have to deal in religion so much of the time? 5) sorry because they have to be good at such a wide range of activities to be effecâ€" tive? I should not have been so surprised. I should have rememâ€" bered! When I was a kid, I can recall, I did not want to be a minister for love nor money. What does a minister do beâ€" sides reading the Bible and praying! What does he do beâ€" sides "preaching‘‘ on Sundays, marrying and burying peoâ€" ple? Who wants to be religious all the time! Waterioo Chronicle, Wednesday, October 11, 1978 â€" Page 19 I have learned that the church and the minister are often targets of criticism because people feel helpless elsewhere in life and can do little or nothing about it. In the church they have the freedom to be critical. It doesn‘t cost them their job. Financially, most pastors and ministers are now paid fairly well when all the fringe benefits are counted in as they ought to be. There is still room for improvement â€" if we want to be fair. I can‘t remember the last time soâ€" meone called me at night. Most people are just as conâ€" siderate of their minister as of others. The wide range of acâ€" tivities to be good at?
