Carl A. Pollock, who was chancellor of the Univerâ€" sity of Waterloo, died last week of a heart attack at his Muskoka cottage. He was 74. _ _ â€" After earning degrees at the University of Toronto and Oxford, Mr. Pollock joined Electrohome Ltd., becoming president in 1951. In 1957 he was one of the founding members of UW‘s board of governors. Elected chairman of the board in 1966, Mr. Poliock was named chancellor in 1975, the same year he was named an officer of the Order of Canada. In December, 1977 he was elected to his seâ€" cond term as chancellor. Mr. Pollock is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter. Susan Bailey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Bailey of 365 Whitmore Drive, Waterloo, has just completed a 2% year assignment in Haiti with CARE, the interâ€" national relief and development organization and has been posted to Niger in Central Africa. ‘ The CARE program in Niger, a landlocked country which extends into the Sahara desert, includes reâ€" forestation projects, well and fish pond construction and food production. Ms. Bailey‘s fluency in the French language and experience in Haiti, where she administered sixty foodâ€"forâ€"work and development projects in the poverty stricken north east area, will be of great help in her new job. Accustomed to travelâ€" ling two weeks out of each month, usually alone over deserted mountain roads by jeep or on horseback, and having experienced most of the hardships and some of the diseases orfe expects in such tasks, Susan Bailey should be equal to the challenge of her new job in Niger. Over 600 delegates to the Federation of Women Teachers® Associations of Ontario 60th Annual Meeâ€" ting acclaimed Joan Westcott as President for 1978â€"79. Ms. Westcott, a viceâ€"principal at Crestview Public School in Kitchener, has been granted a year‘s leave of absence by the Waterloo County Board of Educaâ€" tion to assume her responsibilities. A prominent fiâ€" gure in local Federation matters, Ms Westcott has been active provincially on many committees and has served on the Board of Directors and provincial Exâ€" ecutive for the past three years Her responsibilities will include membership on the Board of Governors and Executive of the Ontario Teachers‘ Federation. visitations to many of the 78 associations across the province. attendance at the Canadian Teachers‘ Feâ€" deration meetings and an awareness of educational issues affecting students, educators and the public Chancellor of UW dies Waterlo0 at a glance Waterloo resident serves with CARE Kitchener woman acclaimed president SUSAN BAILEY uty n kc o) uh ie Wrpr y 9 4; & $* e 7' « « i like Polioâ€"scar health unit are given a walletâ€"size card on which to record the vaccinations they have had. The regional health unit‘s Linda Pitney, a kineseographist from Toronto, believes that handwriting analysis is gaining in popuâ€" larity and that it could be useful to many professionals. â€" Handwriting analysis is not linked to ESP or the ocâ€" cult and according to Linda Pitney, the sooner people come to realize this the better. For the past nine years Ms. Pitney has watched the field grow from an unacâ€" cepted phenomenon surrounded by mystery to a sub ject which is catching the interest of social workers, psychologists and criminal investigators. Handwriting analysis becoming widely accepted _ How did this Toronto resident become involved in such a questionable field as early as nine years ago? "It was my big ambition to be a psychologist but along the way my education was broken,"‘ said Ms. Pitney. "I admit that I was cynical and thought it (handwriting analysis) was crazy. Upon further investigation Ms. Pitney began to see some merit in the subject. Today she is thoroughly convinced that only good can come out of it. Her feeâ€" lings on the matter became so strong that two years ago she founded the Canadian College of Kineseoâ€" graphy in Toronto. Kineseography, meaning the psyâ€" chology of written movement, is the trade name she has applied to writing analysis. During a visit to Waterloo, Ms. Pitney said kineseoâ€" graphy is more than just a matter of defining how someone crosses their T‘s. A complete analysis takes approximately eight hours and costs $75 to $80. Generalizations, such as those found in columns apâ€" pearing regularly in newspapers and magazines. should be taken with a grain of salt. In a true handwriâ€" ting analysis one or two characteristics will offset another. Ms. Pitney said that generalizations and peoâ€" ple who set up booths at fairs and charge $1 for an analysis, only bring harm to the subject matter at a time when she feels it should be promoted and taken seriously â€" “T-t-l'(:'aih.'alysl views handwriting as a direct message from the brain. She cauâ€" tioned that although the preâ€" sent scare is reducing, the need for regular immunizaâ€" tion shots is very important. ‘‘Individuals must take some responsibility for keeâ€" ping track of when they need immunization shots," said Dr. Huntington. ‘"But unforâ€" tunately, they probably won‘t unless something really frightening is hapâ€" ate for this POLLIO, WHOOPING COUGH, DIPTHERIA, TEâ€" TANUS: | Every infant should receive a combinaâ€" tion shot for these diseases in the first year of life and a booster shot at 18 months. Ms. Pitney said that whether she analyses a person‘s rough notes or a neatly contrived sample of writing, she comes up with the same perâ€" sonality analysis. The kineseographist said this school of thought has come a long way in the last nine years and employers, social workers and the police are using her abilities. ‘‘Nine years ago a number of church groups wouldn‘t let me speak to them on the subject,"" said Ms. Pitney. "I‘d have to really push to get an interâ€" view on a radio or television network. A lot of newspapers turned down my request for publicity beâ€" cause they ‘weren‘t that kind of publication.‘"" Today Ms. Pitney lectures all over the continent, analyses resumees for various insurance companies in Toronto and works with emotionally disturbed chilâ€" dren and battered wives. She is in the process of inâ€" troducing the subject to the Canadian educational sysâ€" Eevn‘l“ She sees it as a method of pinpointing learning disabilities and emotional problems and also as a method of selecting teachers. _ . Ms. Pitney has also done her share in analysing the handwriting of politicians and entertainers. Prime Minister Trudeau, Conservative leader Joe Clark, NDP leader, Ed Broadbent, Flora McDonald and former US president Richard Nixon have been under her scrutiny. She has also analysed the penmanship of Betty Kennedy. Jean Taylor and Truman Capote. Whose handwriting would Ms. Pitney like to take a look at? "I would love to analyze Diefenbaker‘s and Xavrier Hollander‘s the Happy Hooker," she said Ms. Pitney is presently touring centres in Southern Ontario in an effort to publicize kineseography and her school. Persons interested in the subject may conâ€" tact her by sending inquiries to Box 922, Station K. Toronto .
