For example, if the costs of the Post Office conâ€" tinually rise while the service provided declines, by the time another half century has passed (give or take 40 years) we might expect the Canada Post Office to be handling next to no mail, while charging anyone brave enough to slip a letter into a mail box several hundred dollars. Similarly, if the main way for Canadians to get rich continues to be by selling out to foreign investors, we could end up with no Canadian owning anything. In the language of logic, there is a phrase reductio ad absurdum. It means to carry any argument to a ridiculous extreme as a way to demonstrate truth or falsity. In 50 years, everyone would work for the governâ€" ment â€" a prospect as depressing as the opposite exâ€" treme, of everyone depending on private enterprises for employment. Those who work, that is. They‘ll earn the highest wages in history, while supporting the largest number of unemployed in history. Or if you‘re really pessimisâ€" tic, you could argue that in 50 years, no one will be working: we‘ll all be on unemployment insurance. Spelling stifles commonâ€"sense To the editor As the summer draws to a close, we find that the Water Conservation Centre comes to the end of a beâ€" ginning. Reflections over the past summer reveal the positive effects that one can discern throughout the community. The Centre‘s influence on the public‘s awareness for the need to conserve water has been considerable. The response from the Regional resiâ€" dents to the information stuffers and pamphlets (mailed with the water bill), the conservation display at the malls, and the mailâ€"out kits was one of overâ€" whelming interest towards our ground water resourâ€" ces. Perhaps, the greatest praise should be directed to the newspaper, radio and television personnel who have responded exceptionally well during the dry times we all faced this summer. As such, we at the Water Conservation Centre applaud these efforts which reflect your concern as members of the comâ€" munity. Is{hat the way we want it? (2) Proâ€" paganda has power. Does it overpower you or do you have a mind of your own? Then this timely article says: Education teaches you to think. Propagandists tell you what to think. True educators present all sides of an issue and encourage discussion. Propagandists hammer hard on their view and discourage discussion. Many times their true motives are hidden. They distort and twist facts, specialize in lies and [I TOLD THEM RESTRKTING THE POLIO SHOTS TO THOSE | UNDER 18 WOULDNT . _ ~ |SHORTEN THE LNEâ€"UPS ! The earlier mention of ‘the end of a beginning‘ has several implications. One refers to the possible extenâ€" sion of the Water Conservation Centre on a more perâ€" manent basis. The Regional government is willing to donate operational costs of about $8,000 for the twelve month project. At present we are waiting in anticipaâ€" tion for a Canada Works grant to cover expenses for the salaries of the three or four full time employees. Providing that these funds are appropriated, the Cenâ€" tre will remain as a community service programme for at least one year. In the event that the funds are not made available, we hope that the summer project‘s end will be the beginning of a more conservation conscious public. In either case we appeal to media organizations, such as yourselves, to make a diligent effort to keep water conservation in the ‘eyes of the public‘. Water conserâ€" vation necessitates a year round involvement and is not just a summer concern. This must behrealized by all of us in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo if we are to maintain our present high quality, cool, ground water resource. ‘ Once again, we thankâ€"you for your coâ€"operation this past summer in making the community aware of the water situation. We are also grateful for the publicity that you have given the Water Conservation Centre. In other words they take the hook, line and sinker. The God of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbeâ€" lievers, that they might not know the vital truths of our time. What about you? Do you let others think for you, or do you think for yourself ? To the Editor We have a young friend who is an engineering stuâ€" dent at the University of Waterloo. Because he is in the coâ€"op program he finds it impossible to find anyâ€" where to live. _ It is surprising that the University does not use its recognized computer system to deal with this kind of problem. Many students must face this problem conâ€" stantly. One feels too, that there must be some people who do in fact, accept students on a four month basis. t would be of advantage to those householders renting rooros, and students, to have some kind of information about. â€" This is not intended as a criticism, but a suggestion for an improved system. As a university teacher, I do know students have to deal with many problems and pressures, some of which might be eased. \.)
