Publisher: Paut Winkier Business Manager: Woligang Urschel Notwithstanding Burns Proudfoot‘s crude attack on Monna Zentner (Chronicle, June 21/78), it is curious that he chose a piece of Frank Epp‘s sophistry to suggest that Zentner is confusing an antiâ€"Israeli position with antiâ€"semiâ€" tism. Actually, Zentner focused attention to another facet of Epp‘s personal philosophy, exemplified on page 251 of his book (Whose Land is Palestine?): "And Germany‘s ‘final solution‘ for the Jews in the twentieth century is an injustice and horror too great to describe in words. Admittedly, many Jews too were not without social guilt (italics added), but that is quite beside the point in the light of the wrongs that were done against them by European populations and their rulers, most of whom supposedly enjoyed the enlightment of the Christian faith." Epp neither documents nor explains what he means by the "social guilt" of many European Jews. One has to wonder what the motivation would be to cdompel Epp to add such a qualifying phrase to a general condemnation of Nazism. (See also page 250 of his book.) With the inclusion of such a proviso, the implicit thrust of Epps‘ statement fits neatly into part of the traditional anâ€" tisemitic package. Thus Epp sustains the tragic myth that the Jews (as a group) share the blame for the Final Solution because they were guilty of some concocted social wrongâ€" doing. The victims become a contributing cause to the Holoâ€" caust. This strange interpretation of modern history is indepenâ€" dent of Epp‘s profound antiâ€"Israeli position. Thus, contrary to Proudfoot‘s assertion, it appears that Epp (at least in print) manages to be both unequivocally antiâ€"Israel and benignly antiâ€"semitic. In fact, often in his book these two ‘antis‘ seem to be so intricately intertwined that even Epp is incapable of separating one position from the other . Canadians are killed in automobile accidents at the rate of more than ten a day and it has been estimated that between five and ten per cent of the beds in our general hospitals are occupied by trafficâ€"accident vicâ€" tims. Our highways are awfully bloody. Faulty design and mechanical failure have conâ€" tributed significantly to the bloodâ€"sacrifice exacted from us for the privilege of having automobiles. Manâ€" ufacturers, prodded by public opinion and governmenâ€" tal action and probably by their own consciences, are showing increasing responsibility in the design and making of automobiles. Most garagemenâ€"seem to be men of basic honesty and.competence, but there is ample evidence that some of them do careless work on our cars and trucks. But if every manufacturer and garageman agreed not to put a vehicle on the road until it had received Ralph Nader‘s personal stamp of approval, we would still have serious road safety problems. When we have said all that there is to be said about the makers and maintainers of automobiles, we still have to come to terms with responsibilities of drivers, your responâ€" sibilities and mine. A few years ago the Roman Catholic Church in France declared certain driving faults to be ‘"sins‘"‘, which must be confessed. A spokesman for the French bishops pointed out that these are all ‘"sins of pride"‘, and among them he listed dangerous speeding, illegal passing, and drunken driving. We are all proud of our driving ability: one gets the impression that about 95 per cent of all drivers consider themselves above average in driving ability. Many of us, perhaps most of us, undergo subtle personality changes when we get behind the wheel of a powerful automobile â€" and a false and dangerous pride is an important element in these changes. Road safety is not merely an engineering and legal concern: it is also a significant issue in personal morality, a matter of personal integrity.
