This column is a departure from the usual,. Hoâ€" wever, this time of year lends itself to looking at and repairing brickwork, particularly the chimneys on our older buildings. ~ _ Bricks have been~made and used since before the birth of Christ. Early brick was shaped by hand using dirt, water and straw which was then dried in the sun. An example of early brick making methods is eviâ€" dent in these two chimneys located next to the old post office building on King Street in Waterioo. «+ In later years clay was used and sandy matter added when néeded. Large stones were removed and water was added and thoroughly mixed in. This mixâ€" ture was ready to put in a mould, a wooden box with no top and usually no bottom: The mould was dipped in water or sand to prevent the clay from sticking. The moulder took a lump of clay weighing 8 or 9 pounds and threw it into the mould. The filled mould was taken to the drying floor, set down, and the empty mould was picked up, leaving the raw brick to dry for several hours. They were moved and placed in low staeb.zd after several days or weeks were taken to a kiln stacked inside ready to be fired or burned. Brick moulding machines were developed around 1793 in the U.S. and 1829 a machine could make 25,000 bricks in 12 hours. They were ready to fire immediateâ€" ly. They soild for 5 to 8 dollars per thousand. Todays prices are $155 per thousand. A later development was a machine that forced clay out of a tube the width and thickness of a brick and cut During last Thursday‘s Regional Council meeting, the counciliors voted to: & endorse a resolution by the City of Kitchener to esâ€" tablish and promote the use of standard refillable soft drink bottle system. e endorsed a resolution by the City of Stratford requesting the Province of Ontario ban the sale of soft drinks in any nonâ€"refillable container effective December 31. 1978. _ & defer judgment on the uniform sewage rate issue until June 29. 1978. e review their byâ€"law restricting new cars for rental to an age of 15 months, in response to an appeal from Driveâ€"Aâ€"Deal of Waterloo, and dismiss the company‘s appeal to have licensing committee‘s decision reversed and license issued, and defer seeking a court injunction until after the court hearing of June 28. 1978 From the Region Downtown Perspective â€" For some time now, the WDRA has been promoting the retention of the Central Residential Area. We feel that this area has many worthwhile features not the least of which is the larger older houses. However, while it is highly desirable to retain the archiâ€" tectural style and character of the neighbourhood houses, there are certain areasinabousethatshonï¬slu)eup-gmded to modern standards. One of these areas is lation. With the continuing trend toward higher fuel costs, coupled with the decreasing availability of energy, insulation can be a wise investment. _ However, insulation must be correctly installed. Poor inâ€" stallation can lead to problems of entrapped moisture which can cause damage which could cost more to repair than the the clay off at the proper lengths. _ _ ___©" > ~* . Installation, and the provision of proper vapor barriers, is a special problem in older houses, beâ€" cause the walls are already enclosed, and because no two are exactly alike and thus readyâ€"made solutions do not often apply. Whether you are planning to install your own insulation or are concerned that you can adequately supervise the person you hire, you will find a workshop on insulation helpful, parâ€" ticularly one which is geared to the older house. For this reason, the WDRA and the Kâ€"W Conservation Ceatre are coâ€" sponsoring a workshop on insulation at the Adult Recreation Centre on Thursday, June 29th, at 8 p.m. 9 P 5es P SA â€" «B *:"‘.
