Aw, how about a stor out of your big book again. ways said you‘d tell me someday when I‘m older. Well I am older now. I‘m already five years old. Yes, I guess you‘re a big girl now, princess. Well, OK, since you were such a big help with drying the supper dishes. Oh, goody! My very own blanket story. Did it hapâ€" pen long ago? Just after you were born, honey. That‘s a long, long time ago. Well, about five years, eh. I guess it was a spring evening much like tonight, when you were only three months old and you were sleeping in 4 little basâ€" sinette that was down in the livingroom that night because I wanted to keep an eye on you while watchâ€" ing the playoffs. You were just a tiny tyke â€" but you were having some trouble with croup or something like that and we kept a close watch on you. Your mother had gone to the church that evening to do some quilting with the other ladies. You know how they are always getting some quilts ready for the relief sale about this time of year. Well, Mommy and I had been married only a little more than a year then and she hardly knew anything about quilting. You see, where she grew up the young ladies just spent their free time goâ€" ing to dances or movies, or things like that. They would hardly ever think of making quilts at a church But, once your mother found out about all the different things that folks at dur church are busy with â€" she beâ€" came interested and wantâ€" ed to help too. > ; So there she was that night, and the older womâ€" en were helping the youngâ€" er ladies learn how to do it. Your great grandmothâ€" er was there, but she‘s gone now;, she kept busy with quilting right up past eighty and really loved Daddy, will you tell me out my blanket this By Harry A. One of the ladies had joked about watching that Mommy wouldn‘t do someâ€" thing drastic â€" you know, how she does things funâ€" ny at times. Like the othâ€" er day when she got the sugar and salt mixed up and the stew tasted funny. Or the time when she forâ€" got the baking soda in the chocolate cake,; or the fried potato fire because she stayed too long at the phone. Anyway, they were kidding her a little that evening and Mommy likeâ€" ly had something funny to say to make everybody feel happy. Some of the women were drinking cofâ€" fee as they stitched; they were probably ‘doing quite a bit of talking too. But there were also two little girls who were up to some mischief. They had found a bottle of nail polish in Mommy‘s bag and were just trying it out for the first time. Well, during that eveâ€" ning you suddenly had a bad spell with vomiting and all, and I called the church to see if your mothâ€" er could come home. As she got up to go to the phone, Mommy created quite a commotion. It seems she had stitched through her skirt and now the whole quilt jerked after her as she got up quickly. Some of the ladies had their needles tugged away on them; one of them upset her coffee, and in â€" their scramble to get out of the way the two little misâ€" chiefs spilled their nail polish. What a mess! What was to have been a colourâ€" ful quilt was now ruined by a long coffee stain and blotches of red nail polish. And they couldn‘t get startâ€" ed cleaning right away beâ€" cause they had to cut Momâ€" my loose first. Some time later the ladies decided it would be fitting to present Momâ€" Ezra Ave. will be closed, effective toâ€" day, for about next three weeks while the city installs new pavement, sidewalks, and gutters along its entire length, from King St. to Albert St. The street will be open to local traffic only. Well, Mommy took it home and had a good look at it. Pretty soon she had an idea â€" you know how she‘s always coming stain resembled the trunk of a tree while farther up the nail polish spots looked like apples. So with added details until that baby quilt became what it is now â€" a quaint little apple tree quilt. And you just love it don‘t you honâ€" ey? â€" e I sure do, Daddy. Ummm sometimes I think I can even smell the apples. What would have happenâ€" ed to it if they hadn‘t spillâ€" ed things on it? Oh it likely would have been sold at the relief sale auction in New Hamâ€" burg along with the othâ€" ers. Then would it have stayâ€" ed there all the time? ~ No, people from around here buy them and take them home. But the imâ€" portant thing is the monâ€" _ ey from those quilts is‘ used to send very useful things to needy people all cZï¬)und the world. So, since this quilt didn‘t get sold some poor little girl far away may have missed getting something you might say. Is that really true? Don‘t worry about it now. There are many ways that we can work to make up for it. Who knows, some day you may be able to quilt and sew even better than Mommy. _ That‘s right, you sure can. Now good night, honâ€" ey ; have a good sleep . Good night, Daddy. Yeah ...1 can even tie my shoe laces all by myâ€" self already.
