Tho Eimira Slonat â€"â€" â€" 19,900 _‘ _ weeklyreaders . I owe you an explanation. 6 Three weeks ago I wrote a column on a friend of mine, Wayne Kemick. If you recall, Wayne, a former football player at Laurier, was in an acciâ€" dent and is in Kingston General Hospital, paralysed. The purpose of the article was to inform readers that a fund had been started by Rich Ott to help Wayne and his wife Marilynne with expenses arising from the accident. In the article I Stated that Kemicks would need help because of hospital bills, lack of income and reâ€" habilitation costs. â€" Since that time I have been in contact with Mariâ€" lynne and Kingston General Hospital and they have given me a more complete picture. . Kemâ€" icks face a loss of income due to the accident, and therefore our fund will continue. So far the reâ€" sponse has been pleasing,; and I thank you for your support. Marilynne said in her letter that although the initial prognosis of Wayne‘s condition has not changâ€" ed. he is in high spirits and is determined to walk out of KGH. Knowing Wayne, I wouldn‘t bet against it. ~ A study made in California a year or so ago came up with a surprising answer. _ It concluded that pound for pound, jockeys are the fittest. Knowing the horse racing game fairly well, 1I‘m not going to dispute that fact. At least, not too much. . Sure jockeys ride gruelling races in a very uncomâ€" fortable position for up to two miles, and it does Who are the fittest athletes in the world? Footâ€" ball players?" Hockey players? Rugby players? Skiers? e rar.car Q ~>s_.â€" c w 2s € .ce Seo t n y .3z s indeed take a great deal of. stamina to keep a horse in check for that distance. & But for my money, soccer players are the fitt est athletes, and not necessarily because of their own sport. s My reasoning is that in the past five years, two soccer players, Kyle Rote Jr. and Brian Budd have won the world superstar competition sponsorâ€" ed by ABC TV. Budd, a Canutskie by the by, who plays for Colorâ€" ado of the North American Soccer League, won this year‘s competition in convincing fashion over the likes of pole vaulter Bob Seagren, (a former winner), Oakland Raider tight end Dave Casper, Cleveland Brown halfback Greg Pruitt, and a host of Euro pean and Australian specialists. â€" _ Canadian event with ridiculous â€"ease over Tony Gabriel and the boys last summer, was more than adequate in each of the seven events he contested. Most impressive finishes came in the half mile run where Budd won by 10 seconds and the 100â€"yard swim where he easily outdistanced Seagren and waterskier Wayne Grimditch. the announcers rarely mentioned Budd was the Canaâ€" dian winner, and Budd himself, who when interviewâ€" ed. seemed to like himself quite a bit. _ But without doubt his best effort came in the fitâ€" ness test where he did 46 chinups in a minute and 82 squat jumps in the same time. Which, by the way, is phenomenal. If you don‘t believe me, try to do 30 and 50. You‘ll die. I tried and did 16 and 29 before being revived by a mug of the coldest. Budd ailso had seconds in the bicycle and rowing finals and a third in the 100â€"yard dash. The only event he faltered in was the obstacle course, which was held after he had clinched the overâ€"all title. He clumâ€" sily knocked down the high jump bar but managed a money smile when Seagren came up to him and said, ‘‘"What‘s this, you‘re human after all!" e .. the Permanent So while other athletes seemed to have just one or two specialties, Budd succeeded by being very good in everything. Which lends more credibility to the game of soccer and its popularity sweep which continues across the continent. Budd, by winning, pocketed $39,400 for his efforts. About six times his salary with Colorado. should like it. Waterloo Tigers not having enough quality players this Interâ€"County Major Baseball League season. A reliable source told me Monday that three startâ€" ing members of the Brantford Red Sox have obâ€" tained their release to play for the Tigers this seaâ€" son. I won‘t mention their names until they sign (possibly today) but all three will be welcome adâ€" ditions to the Tigers side. & NOW YOU CAN GO SHOPPING You heard it here first dept. .. .don‘t worry about : , when you‘re the best, I guess you We‘ll alwou; be here to help you make it *# *
