For full report see page nine. 123rd Year No. 1 By Paul Marck A few dozen city of Waterloo employees are trading in physical fatness for physical fitness, under an afterâ€" hours program arranged and partially financed by the city. . City council decided late last year to jump on the fitâ€" ness bandwagon, by offering employees a 10â€"week.proâ€" gram. So far 38 employees, including Mayor Marjorie Carroll and Ald. Brian Turnbull, Waterloo Fire Chief John Staller, and Chamber of Commerce manager Jack Middlemass have taken the city up on its offer to get in shape. The program, to be taught in oneâ€"hour sessions three times a week, at the Seagram Stadium gym, will cost a total of $4,500. The city and Wintario will pay part of the cost, with participants each paying a $30 registraâ€" tion fee. & The program is being offered by the Canadian Fitâ€" ness Institute, a private Toronto firm that‘specializes in teaching getâ€"inâ€"shape exercises to large groups, modifying the routine to fit an individual‘s needs. Says instructor Peter Paleczny, who along with tw6 University of Waterloo kinesiology students will teach the program, its aim is to progress from low intensity exercising to a level of conditioning suitable for each participant. It involves basic calistenics, weight lifting. and some gym games. The program stresses aerobic conditioning, or strengthening the heart through increased oxygen intake into the blood, flexibility and general postural strengthening. Participants must have a signed doctor‘s statement saying they‘re physically fit to take part in the proâ€" gram, and just to be doubly sure there are no compliâ€" cations, each one takes five physical tests to deterâ€" mine how hard they should exert themselves in their exercising. This includes taking body girth measurements, a strength test, calibrating body fat, a flexibility test, and an oxygen intake test. ‘‘Most people, if they start sensibly and work proâ€" gressively, can get and stay fit," says Mr. Paleczny. ‘"There‘s no competition between individuals, they just measure their own progression from the point * {Continued on page 16) BRILL STEPS DOWN erloo Siskin generalâ€"man Each ;;e'rson‘s fitness program is then based on these results. i f ues esns _ s o t e + ' o ts i C oo A j ol oc o . »esooee ' n e 3 " s F ie % 4 s i4 % A 3 #2 4y > mt e 1,;,.\’;-;\{: e & \‘? s ce s o w se Tss By Paul Marek _ â€"\ premoté and beautify the city‘s core is similar to the move made by downtown Kitâ€" Downtown Waterlcoo merchants have . chener businessmen last year, Wayne Dearâ€" hired a private consulting firm to help them mond, a director of the ‘Waterioo Downtown promote the downtown shopping area.
