Union College, for those who aren‘t aware, is a small college in Schenectady, N.Y. that under coach Ned Harkness has developed into a NCAA Division II powerhouse in only three short years. Their recâ€" ord over that time is 47â€"6â€"2. But all those problems are minimal when comâ€" pared to those facing Union. Said Union president Thomas Bonner on Friday : ‘"In its entire histlgp', this college has never sufâ€" fered so unfairly, nor been so devastatingly attacked as in the past seven days. Our integrity, our standâ€" ards, our sense of honor and justice have been severely questioned in news coverage that extends from coast to coast. Harkness‘s main gripes were that team members were being treated unfairly, that they were ridiculed by. fellow students, and that they received unfair criticism in the campus publications. Heâ€"said he had been harassed from the time he put together a winning team in his first season, but that recent incidents brought things to a head. Some of those incidents were : â€" four players, including two Canadians, were barred from classes and hockey for failing grades. They had less than the necessary 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Harkness claims extenuating circumstances were not taken into consideration. It also screwed up the vacation of the players, involved, who undoubtedly would have made other plans for the holidays. One Laurier player‘s parents even made the trip to Schenectady before the tourâ€" scionable." â€" local newspapers printed news of the suspenâ€" sions, and Harkness blamed the school for leaking the information. Then the team itself backed Harknesses move the following Tuesday by quitting as a group in protest of the lack of support given the team by the college :?inistration and their treatment by fellow stuâ€" nts. It was too bad for those schools, who practised right up until Christmas in anticipation of the secâ€" ond annual event. Last year‘s tourney was a fanâ€" tastic success, with Laurier winning consolation honors by beating Ohio State. Which left Laurier, as well as Guelph and York, out in the cold as far as the tourney was concerned. ney was cancelled, only to have to make the long trek back to Toronto. But Harkness, who had a long illustrious college coaching career before an unsuccessful stint as coach of NHL‘s Detroit Red Wings, claims he has had nothiry but harassment since taking over as Union boss. And things got so bad that on Dec. 23 Harkness resigned his post, sending the schools‘ hockey program into a state of turmoil. Somewhere in this sports section you are probably looking for the results of the Union College hockey tournament last week in which the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks were entered. © Well, don‘t bother. There was no tournament. But why, you ask. The best reason was because there was no team to host it. _ Major Atom both the school yearbook and newspaper as WATERLOO MAJOR ATOM CITY LEAGUE GAMES DEC. 24/77 termed Harkness‘s quitting as ‘"unconâ€" GAMES JAN. 7/78 ’v.\ & & 4 * % â€" Harkness was suspened last year for making a recruiting visit to a prospect in violation of Diviâ€" sion II rules. . â€" four prospective players were denied admission _ to the 2,000â€"student institution because of poor grades, / but got into other Ivy League colleges. . Well, somewhere along the line, I fail to see what all the fuss is about. When I was in university I read every day in stuâ€" dent newspapers reports ridiculing their sports team. At some schools that practice is a journalistic fact of life. The fact that four players were suspended and four more were denied admission only attests to the high standards of the school. Failing athletes is an well as students were excessively hard on the team, according to Harkness, with this year‘s yearbook printing 24 pages of controversial material on the team and nothing else. â€" a student journalist had a paper cup kicked out of his hand last year by a player and it took legal action to get the player back in the school this fall. * . &. for Kittens, Cats & Toms Junior Sizes: Cords and Jeans 3°° off reg. price Knits and Shirts 3%° off reg. price DOOR OPENING SPECIAL: Free album to the first 50 customers with this ad.
