Lions upset Vikings in bâ€"ball opener The game was the first of four at Forest Heights collegiate Sports Night. In the third game of the night Bluevale Knights thumped Cameron Heights Gaels 47â€"32. Ralph Draws and Ron Cameron sparked St. Jerome‘s with 12 points apiece. Bill Kieswetter had 11 and Gary Krulicki seven for first year head coach Tom Kieswetter, a former University of Waterloo star. The key to Lions success was shutting off the inside shooting of 6â€"2 Waterloo star Tim Harrold. Harrold had 14 points, nearly all from the outâ€" side, while John Brogee had 10 and Roger Tribert eight for Vikings. "I‘m excited. I‘m happy the way our guys played," said the curlyâ€"haired boss. "I don‘t think overâ€" all the game was played that well, but it‘s a start."‘ . ‘"We had our chances, but the inside men didn‘t get the big buckets,"" said Waterloo coach John Zdraâ€" hal. The lead seeâ€"sawed back and forth all game. Waâ€" terloo went up 17â€"9 with six minutes to go in the second quarter but Lions rallied to tie 19â€"19 at the half mainly through the shooting of Draws and Kieswetter. At St. Mary‘s, Janice Levesque hooped 16 and Jane Foster 14 for the home squad which led 19â€"16 at the half But then with Krulicki providing the spark St Jerome‘s pulled ahead 24â€"19 early in the third. _____ _Linda Melnychuck and Sandy Labbett added sik for Knights, who trailed 17â€"12 at the half. Cecily Steeb and Liz Scully had 10 apiece for Cameron. "It was a sloppy game for both teams, but they had first game jitters. â€" o "It wasn‘t that bad a game for us, we only lost by two."‘ â€" s ‘"Krulicki really controlled the tempo of the game," said Kiesweter. ‘"He‘s only 5â€"8 but he got a lot of boards for us. And we have to have five guys boardâ€" ing or they‘ll beat us."‘ Bluevale poured in 19 points in the second quarâ€" ter to register its win over Cameron. Knights lead 39â€"10 at the half, Gaels closed to 3528 after three quarters and then Bluevale pulled away to victory. In a junior boys contest Frank Farai notched 17 to lead Cameron to a 39â€"21 win over Bluevale. Scott Lacey had six for Bluevale. Women‘s ‘basketbail Toni Schmetzer poured in 12 points Friday as Bluevale Knights upset Cameron Heights Gaels 32â€"30 in the opening game of the Twin City High School senior girls basketball schedule. f In another game St. Mary‘s scored 22 fourthâ€" quarter points to defalte Waterloo Vikings 53â€"31. § Both teams exhibited opening game jitters on the offensive and defensive boards. Neither shot the lights out, and the passing and ball control left something to be desired. But when the dust had cleared Lions eked out a mild upset, 42â€"40 over the defending champion Vikâ€" ings. The ball was thrown in to Paul Berger and the guard tossed up a 40â€"footer which missed the mark. ‘‘We wanted him (Berger) to pass to Harrold, but he dribbled and shot a lower percentage shot, said Zdrahal. Despite the fact that Waterloo beat Lions by 22 points in exhibition play, Zdrahal expected a close game. Brogee was the most adept on either team for shot blocking and rebounding. Phil Jarrett paced the winners with 15 followed by Dan Schiedel with 11 and Rich deSilva with 10. Andy Atamaniuk hopped 14 for Cameron. Then in the fourth quarter Lions opened up a sixâ€" point 39â€"33 lead which Waterloo closed to 42â€"40 with only 18 seconds left. Vikings were given extra life when Krulicki missâ€" ed on a foul shot with four seconds remaining. ‘‘"No matter though, close games are won and lost during the game, not on the final play." ‘"‘Yes, it was an 8â€"10 point game at most. They took away our inside with an aggressive "D"" and that was the ballgame. But it‘s not the end of the world." Kieswetter commended the play of Krulicki and Draws while Zdrahal singles out Brogee and Triâ€" bert for their fine play. It was not a classic. But it was exciting, right to the final buzzer. That‘s the best way to describe the opening game of the Twin City High School senior boys basketâ€" ball schedule between St. Jerome‘s Lions and Waterâ€" loo Vikings Friday afternoon. Waterloo rallied to take a 29â€"25 lead but Draws hit on a key three point play to tie at 29. â€" â€" By Rick Campbel!
