Ranger draft choices from last season have fit in well with the team foundation this year. and No. I pick Kerry Williston. a performer with North York of the Tier II loop 1aatyeartuisbemasotidcxmtritNtoriyh1srte_ittant paign. being consistently paired with Paul Reinhart on the Ranger blueline. Daryl Holmquist. drafted by Rangers two years ago. has improved sufficiently following another season in North Bay. and has cracked the Ranger lineup this year. With defensive duties uppermost in his mind. Holmquist has been an excellent complement to Gingras. and the two have been paired together most of this young season. Rangers. with a slight excess of talent on defence. have also been using Joe McDonnell. a draft from last year's Kitchener Ranger "B" team. With injuries so prevalent last season. McDonnell had several appearances with the "A" squad to help plug the gaps and that experience has undoubtedly made McDonnell a much superior performer for this current campaign. Overall. the defense will be counted on to be the main- stay of this edition of the Rangers and hopefully the goals against will be cut down drastically from last year"s rath- er healthy total. Obviously. with a more defensive approach to the game. a question mark has to be placed in goaltending duties. Rangers have two returnees to the team. in the form of a Mutt and Jeff combination with the lanky Mark Fish- er and the rather diminutive Ray Pilon. Pilon, a draft from 1976. and Fisher. acquired after a disenchanting sojourn at a New York State College last year. are both confident in their own abilities to improve on last year's rather high goals-against-average. Early season per- formances have proven that both goalies have the ability to perform more than adequately in Major "A†Com- petition. and Fisher. following some great early season goal-crease work, was named as Rangers' first Player of the Month for 1977-78. What both goalies still require to become set in their work. is a consistency performance level. a very difficult task at this level of hockey. With a hectic 68 game schedule. and the travel involved. it's not always possible to be UP for every game. but it is a requirement and ingredient so necessary to achieve stardom at the netminding position. Ranger brass are confident that this consistency between the pipes will appear. and that Fisher and Pilon will be the goaltending combination that Will get the job completed each week. And finally. on the offensive side of the sheet. Ranger firepower is another question mark. With the losses from last year's team. many critics feel that there is not suf- ficient talent to pick up the slack. However. a quick analysis of the roster indicates that the situation is not all that bleak. Subject to question marks being placed alongside some of the performers when comparing ability to ultimate performance. the Ranger scoring machine has not been crippled to an irreparable stage. Rangers boast a host of players that could be considered centres. but the quality is not of the calibre of last year's Foster or Laurence. Draft choice Dale Hunter from Strathroy Junior B's has indicated with early season play that he has the talents to dazzle opposing teams. and with each game has been showmg improvement that will eventually have him tagged as Rangers' No. l centreman. The pesky play of Brian Schnurr makes him an in- valuable performer. but he does not possess the offen- sive ability to lead a line. His checking and intense thinking approach to the game however make him one of the crowd favourites. Terry Bovair and Richard Duguay. both second year men with the team are off to slow starts and their play is making it difficult for Ranger Coach Mac- Lean to ice any three players as a third or fourth line for any extended period of time. Returnee Don Greguol. a centre who performs equally well on the wing. is a consistent worker but lacks in the drive or polish to be- come a real scoring threat for the team. Jeff Pasher. another Ranger draft from last year's "B†squad. is also equally at home at centre or Wing. but will require time to adjust to the faster "A" company. " - Rangers Regardless of the ultimate standings. Junior '.\" hockey is still one of the most exciting and entertaining sports for fans. and as in the past. the NHL stars of the future will perform each Friday night at the Kitchener Auditorium, All in all. look for an exciting season in Major “A" hockey. Rangers have already displayed some exciting moments at the Auditorium. Despite the embarrassing back-ttFback losses to the Fincups. Rangers have a team worthy of consideration for second spot in the Emms. behind London Knights However. the surprising early season play of Windsor Spitfires. currently in first place. may relegate Rangers to a third place fight With the Hamilton Fincups. Toronto Marlies and Niagara Falls Flyers should do battle tor the last playotl spot. how- ever Marlies may be tough in the second half of the season with an excess of home games following a tough opening 21 games with eighteen of them on the road, ret-es okUeteisce are Paul's older
