Only four games ago they demolished Hamilton Tiger Catsts-Zandimmediatelywerehypedupaspo- tential Grey Cup champions 1977. They still had a chance for first place in the CFL East, were shooins for at least a playoff berth for the first year in tour-it-uf-tar-Pict-forthe-td thipArgoeutttt. _ My,howtimes have changed. Argoshavenowlostthreegamesinarow. Their record has fallen to b9, worse than the chart that got Russ Jackson fired as head coach last year. The media in Toronto is on the rampage again, berating Argos for everything under the sun. And although I hate to say it, the Boatmen deserve most of the criticism. Their performance against Ottawa last Sunday was nothing short of disgusting. So what that they clinched a playoff spot when Hamilton lost to Montreal Saturday. Second place and a home game for the Eastern semi-final were still up for grabs. Y u’d lik toi but , notgure hair. biff:t',,tt',lt,f, Itlefi oftakingachance. We've got an investment weguarantee. Buttheotteetse, especially quarterback Chuck Baley, Was, pitiful. Just pitiful. Why? . Argos have potentially fantastic effusive talent. The Georgia Connection! gives them sane of the best blocking in the country. Tight end Peter Muller is one of the most cmtsiatestt-piarirtg, and Kelvin Kirk isaneebof-footgridereceiver. . Neil Lumsden and Mark Bragagnoio give the backs, a valuible commodity on the-present CFL market. Leon X-Ray MCQuay is no slouch as a running back either. Last Wednesday many, many hours of sweat and strain came to a pinnacle as the playoffs for Women's Flag Football occurred. - A, A Tie first game, the consolation final. was snapped away by VillagelSouth overSt. Paul'? Ir?. _ A d, The battle for first place was fought out next, be- tween Village 2 South and the Blue Bombers. Though the Blue Bombers had an impressive record of no loss- es, they didn't seem to be able to get the ball away that day. Village 2 South ran away with the champion- ship over Blue Bombers 10-0. The thing is. Montreal had just finished a tiring stretch which saw them take six wins and two ties of eight contests. They deserved a breather. The first hint of mini-exhaustion came Wednesday when Leafs pulled out a tie in the third period. Satur- day Lafleur scored thrice in period one against the Kings but those pesky purple shirts came back with five as they've so often done. And on Sunday I only saw the third period but Habs ran into tough goaltending from Sabre youngster Donnie Edwards in the Buffalo goal. After all. it happens. But anyone" expecting the Mohireal losing streak to last much longer can come up and bet with me anytime. The low point for Buffalo had to come last Sun- day in Seattle when the infant Seahawks demoed Bills 56-17. My gosh, Bills offense was worse to watch than Argos. At least you only have to watch Argos fumble around for three downs. Say, whatever happened to the Buffalo Bills? Only three years ago ou. Simpson ran for over 2,000 yards and led Bills into an AFC semi-final against Pittsburgh. But since then the mighty Bills have fallen. Injuries and internal strife have riddled our NFL neighbour. The Bills offense has been reduced to nil because every geam they play keys on .O.J., Buffalo's only threat. Joe Ferguson has never de- veloped into a first-rate quarterback. And Bills defense has collapsed into one of the worst in the league. . And whatever happened to those Habs on the weekend? Two straight losses? And both at home! Has another dynasty gone down the drain? Not on your life. Fm not particularly a Canadiens fan myself, but their faithful followers have nothing to worry about. as a receiver, for who knows what reason. Lums- den and Bragagnolo have been adequate, but never muscular. McQuay dances around so much he's rarely in forward motion. And Eaiey showed in the Ottawa game more than in any other his reluctance to stay in the pocket and concentrate on finding a pass receiver. In- stead, he dropped the usual six or seven yards and instantly sprinted out of the pocket nearly every time. Nice if you like rattle dazzle but hardly a playtobuildanoffensearound. It seems that the Argo curse has infiltrated the entire offense. Whatever can go wrong will go wrong. Onebig mysteryasfarasrm concerned. Oh Well, enough to enough. I'm not going to belittle Argos any more because a) they're my favorite team; b) they get enough criticism from the media cut-throats in the big city; c) they've proven they can explode offensively at times, as they did in Hamilton, and d) because " like nothing better than for them to prove their critics wrong by winning the Grey Cup. But meanwhile, are they ever painful to watch . . . Bills have only one win in the past 14 games, and that was a 3-0 bore over Atlanta when Falcons opt- ed to go for the winning touchdown instead of a tying field goal. If any other team in the league suffered two losses no one would even hear about it. Only because Montreal hadn't suffered that embarrassment since 1975 was it blasted across the front pages.
