Mr. Foldes is a mathematics student who has.been workâ€" ing for the past three years under the supervision of Dr. "W.T. Tutte, an internationally renowned mathematician. Mr. Wardell, formerly of Oakville, received a master of applied science (M.A.Sc.) degree in systems design engiâ€"â€" neering. . About 800 degrees were awarded at the University of Waâ€" terloo‘s 35th convocation last Friday. About 300 of these were graduate degrees (masters or Phds ). Included were an honorary doctor of letters (D.Litt.) degree to Prof. John Porter of Carleton University, Ottawa, and honorary doctor of laws (LL.D) degree to Bishop Erâ€" nest J. Swalm, Duntroon, Ont. Prof. Porter, sociologist and author of The Vertical Moâ€" saic, delivered the convocation address. Bishop Swalm‘s degree was awarded in recognition of his activities on beâ€" half of pacifism and peace over the past 60 years. The University of Waterloo Alumni Association presentâ€" ed two gold medals on the occasion, one to top masters student, Ronald Waiter Wardell, and one to top Phd. student, Stephane Foldes. Mr. Wardell has been involved in designing and building an ‘"eyewriter‘‘, a piece of equipment that has made it posâ€" sible for a patient in a Western Canadian hospital to comâ€" municate for the first time in her 11 years of life. Mr. Wardell designed and built the electronic components for the equipment and also acquired considerable knowlâ€" edge of perception, physiology, microcomputers in his work. Presently, Mr. Wardell is with the Leighâ€"Marsland orâ€" ganization in Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo. In his Phd. thesis, Mr. Foldes was able to disprove a longâ€" standing proposition, originally put forward by Dr. Tutte. Over 300 students received diplomas â€" at _ Bluevale‘s commencement last Friday evening, more than 100 of them being _ honorary (Grade 13) diplomas. Mark Daniel Bernhardt. Greg Patâ€" rick â€" Weiler, . and â€" Scott James â€" Winhold _ received Ontario scholarships. Timothy Keith received the Waterloo Lions Club Award _ for _ outstanding achievement in year five. Bluevale awards over 300 diplomas Bluevale‘s valedictorian for 1977, Tom Boettger Timothy Eichholz was givâ€" en a standing ovation for a song he composed and sang. accompanying himself on guitar. The song was writâ€" ten for a classmate who died of cancer last year. Mr. Eichholz was also the reâ€" cipient of the Jane Chadder memorial award. He averaged 93 per cent last year. Book awards were given to 36 students by Mrs. D.J. Chapple and Mr. W. Clifâ€" ford. Valedictorian. Thomas Boettger addressed the auâ€" dience with reminiscences of his years at Bluevale. _ _
