Bluevale senior football coach Peter Telford had reason to "believe" Friâ€" day afternoon as he watchâ€" ed his injuryâ€"riddled Blueâ€" vale Knights manhandle the powerful St. Jerome‘s Lions 21â€"6 at Bluevale colâ€" legiate. *‘You can call that a miracle. Knights. who were missâ€" ing three starters and two others for the firstâ€"place battle, exerted total conâ€" trol over the Lions, who seldom lived up to their highlyâ€"regarded reputaâ€" tion. ‘‘That‘s the first time all year we‘ve played conâ€" sistently the whole game from start to finish," said Bluevale head coach Larry Waldock. "It was one heck of _ a _ cleanâ€"hitting _ ball game. The victory clinched a playâ€"off spot for the Knights who are tied for first in the Twin City high school football _ standings _ with Eastwood _ Rebels Both have 5â€"1 records while St. Jerome‘s _ and _ Cameron Heights sport 4â€"2 marks In another game Frâ€" day. Cameron defeated the winless â€" Waterloo â€" Vikings 14â€"0 Knights _ deflated _ St Jerome‘s â€" offensive â€" thrust right on the first series of plays when Duane Wilâ€" liams intercepted a Gerry McNeil pass and raced 61 yards for a touchdown Quarterback _ Stan â€" Chelâ€" mecki added the convert. Immediately _ after, _ St Jerome‘s _ struck _ back With coach Moe Targosz substituting Ray Verbiske at quarterback, the big Lion â€"machin€ went into Reid Campbell of Bii from Stan Chelmecki share of first place. Knights tame Lions By Rick Campbell Bluevale handles St. Jeromes of Bluevale collegiate piles through two St. Jerome‘s defenders after catching a pass mecki during Friday‘s game. Knights upset the highlyâ€"touted â€"Lions 21â€"6 to move into a motion. Verbiske connected on a 65â€"yard passâ€"andâ€"run play touchdown to Doug Psutka. The twoâ€"point convert was no good. From â€" that â€" point _ on Knights took over howâ€" ever. as they succeeded on various razzleâ€"dazzle plays. including a 28â€"yard reverse to Williams and an option by Chelmecki to the Lions 19 at the quarter ended. * ‘‘We tried early running to the outside on their 4 by 4 defense." said Walâ€" dock. "It opened up the inside for us in the second half. + Chelmecki then orchesâ€" trated a greatly â€" varied Bluevale offense. From deep in his own end he worked with Williams on a reverse. then found his favorite receiver Reid Campbell for two key first downs. Knights _ drive _ stalled at the St. Jerome‘s 21 when they tried and misâ€" handled a field goal atâ€" tempt. But Lions went nowhere against a stiffened Blueâ€" vale ~defense and â€" again turned the ball over to the Knights. ‘‘Stan wasn‘t first string last year. so we worked together quite a bit over the summer,. that‘s the reason for our success now.~â€" said the 5â€"10 210 pound Campbell. Williams picked up anâ€" other first down on a fake option pass,. and several plays later Knights hit paydirt â€" when â€" Chelmecki found Campbell on a 21â€" yard touchdown pass Campbell caught the ball at the five and bulldozed through two Lion tacklers for the major. Chelmecki‘s Knights really decided the contest in the. third quarter. Taking over posâ€" session at the 6:45 mark against a stiff wind at their own fiveâ€"yard line. they marched the entire length of the field, mainly up the middle to fullâ€"back Gary Barth. convert made time score 14â€"6. Barth accumulated four first â€" downs himself | as Knights ran out the quartâ€" er and another five minâ€" utes of the fourth quarter before _ the _ pileâ€"driving fullback crashed over from the one with his team‘s third touchdown. *‘We ran Gary a lot in the second half because they had to respect our outside,"" _ said _ Waldock. "It worked,. so we stayed with it." . After _ that â€" touchdown. Lions‘ roar was reduced to a whimper. They did make _ one _ abbreviated thrust as time was runâ€" ning out as Verbiske found Psutka on a 35â€"yard pass to Bluevale‘s 34. However . on the very next play Verbiske was sacked for a 21â€"yard loss by the sturdy Knight â€" front _ four. _ St. Jerome‘s got some of that yardage back. but failed on a fourth down pass attempt and gave up the ball ~ Campbell, who collapsed in near exhaustion at the Bluevale bench late in the fourth quarter. played an outstanding game going both ways for Knights. In addition to his passâ€" catching contributions, he also helped shut off St. Jerome‘s outside running from his defensive end position _ and _ constantly harrassed Verbiske on his the â€" halfâ€" ‘‘This had to be our big gest game all year." said Campbell. "If we lost this one we‘d have to beat Grand River next week to make the playoffs. Beâ€" sides, beating St. Jerome‘s now gives us a big psychoâ€" logical edge if we meet them again in the playâ€" offs." passing attempts. Campbell admitted he was taxed going both ways, but wouldn‘t have it any other way. ‘"The main thing that tires you out is that you have to be up for every play both ways."‘ Waldock, â€" who prefers to play each game one at a time, reflected on his season so far. ‘"We knew Stan (Chelâ€" mecki) could do a job, but realistically we were hopâ€" ing to be in the top four. We don‘t have that many players, and we‘re just hoping to get through the season without more inâ€" juries. ' In Waterloo. the Vikings defense came up valiantly but the offense continued to grind to a halt against Cameron. It took a fourâ€" yard keeper by quarterâ€" back Herb Matis in the third quarter and a blocked punt major by Don Pearcy to provide the visitors with the winning margin. On Friday Bluevale will travel to Grand River to close â€" out _ its _ schedule while Wateriloo hosts St. Jerome‘s. In a junior game Friday St. Jerome‘s scored 14 first quarter points and went on to defeat Bluevale The junior â€"Knights finâ€" ished their schedule with a 2â€"3 mark, good for fourth place.
