Page 22 â€" Waterloo Chronicle, Wednesday Lead Junior B league Coach George Knisley said Saturday night his Waâ€" terloo Siskins are "a bunch of guys who want to play hockey ."‘ And that‘s why Siskins have had such a jackrabbit start to this 1977â€"78 Midâ€" western Ontario Junior B hockey season. Waterloo is flying high after a tremendous week which saw them win three and tie one of four games, giving them a 5â€"0â€"1 chart overâ€"all. That record is good enough for first place in the B loop, one point ahead of the 5â€"1 Stratford Cullitons. Wedâ€" nesday Siskins dropped the Sugar Kings 7â€"1 in Elmira, Friday they outlasted New Hamburg Hahns 96, Saturâ€" day they tied Hespeler Shamrocks 6â€"6 and Sunday they trimmed the ‘Rocks 5â€"2 in Hespeler. ‘*The guys really want to play, that‘s the differâ€" ence between this year and last year," said Knisley. Wednesday Murray Newâ€" man paced Siskins with three goals. Dale Wilson added two while Paul Dahmer and Mark Harris each had one. Wayne England scored for Elmira. Siskins had period lead of 3â€"0 and 4â€"1. Friday night in New Hamâ€" burg Holbrook fired four goals for the black and gold. Dean Oberle had two and Brian Price, Pete Liesemer and Dale Wilson one each. Trailing 7â€"3 early in the third, Hahns rallied for three goals but could not even the score. DIRECTOR‘S MESSAGE : WHAT‘S AN INTRAMURAL? Back in Waterloo Saturâ€" day, Siskins came from In the past, Intramuals has meant for some, a comâ€" petitive program for those that feel they are good enough. Others think that Intramurals is a program that anyone can particiâ€" pate in. Still others feel that it is a program for the hackers, the jocks, the fitâ€" ness freaks and for those with nothing else to do. Intramurals is simply a voluntary internal program of physical activity based on the needs and interests of the University of Waâ€" terloo _ Community. _ The goal of the program is to involve as many people as possible in some form of physical activity on a regulâ€" ar basis. It is believed that participation â€" in â€" physical activity is an important and integral ingredient to one‘s daily life, whether it be for fitness reasons for relaxation, for exhilarâ€" ation,. to learn a new skill or simply to have fun. Whatâ€" ever the reasons, being phyâ€" sically active is a vital conâ€" cern of the program. In the past. it is true,. some have been turned off participation in sport. The Intramural program attempts to stimâ€" ulate activity. and makes ones participation a safe. enjoyable. _ and _ positive experience Anyone _ can participate, regardless of By Rick Campbell â€" Waterloo Chronicle, Wednesday, October 19,1977 Siskins prove they want to play hockey University of Waterloo â€" Intraplay replay behind to go ahead 64 with six minutes remaining but Hespeler rallied with two goals to force the tie. ‘‘"A stupid penalty took the win away from us," said Knisley. "I thought we had it won."‘ Siskins _ dragged _ their feet ‘at the beginning of the game and allowed Rocks to build up a 3â€"1 lead midâ€" way through the game. skill, sex, age, fitness level or whatever. Whether you wish to compete, learn a skill, meet friends, to be involved in officiating or organizing activity or simâ€" ply to participate and play, an Intramural is for you. Last year, over 7000 particiâ€" pations occurred per week in some 50 varied Intraâ€" mural programs. The opâ€" portunity is there. The moâ€" tivation‘s yours. What‘s an ‘"Intramural‘"‘ to you???? STRUCTURE OF INTRAMURALS ..... Waterloo Siskin left wi}\ger Brian Price is thwarted closeâ€"in by Hespeler goalie Ron Scott who dove out to make the save. Price later scored to help his team to a 6â€"6 tie Saturday night. Siskins won three and tied one of four games last week. Essentially _ there _ are four divisions; Competitive, Recreational, Instructional and Athletic Clubs. The Competitive level is the most structured part of the Intramural program. There are leagues, points, awards, officials, playoffs and more stringent rules and reguâ€" lations. Recreational team sports are quite different than competitive leagues. in that these leagues are organized for those indiviâ€" duals who simply want to play for the sake of play The only reward one reâ€" ceives is an intrinsic oneâ€" the enjoyment of simple play. There are no officials, awards, points, league standâ€" ings or playoffs and few ryles â€" just play. High skill level is absolutely not necesâ€" sary. Last fall over 160 teams or 1800 people were involved in this form of Kevin Konings narrowed Oberle and Wilson before the gap to 2â€"1 on a breakâ€" Favaro tied the game with way backhand early in the his second goal on a brilâ€" second period but just as liant threeâ€"way passing quickly Mario Favaro ree play. stored the Hespeler twoâ€" goal lead on a goalmouth _ ‘‘*We spent most of that Hespeler‘s Mark Wentz From that point on Waâ€" laff scored two first period terloo came on and domiâ€" goals, both on rebounds nated ptay until late in the to give his club a 20 lead. game. The _ Instructional program is geared to those who desire to learn how to perform a certain skill. The lifetime skills or those that could carry over in later life are focused in this program. Last fall 800 _ individuals â€" received some level of instruction in over 10 programs. All inquiries _ regarding _ the instructional program should be directed to Saily Kemp at 885â€"1211 ext. 3533. WOMEN‘S FLAG FOOTBALL Flag football for women is alive and well!l Every Monday and Wednesday at 4:30 and 5:20 p.m. on the Village Greens and 5:20 on Columbia 5A field, two teams meet and it‘s a battle to the end. The games are fast, wellâ€"played and the guys could take a lesson from these girls on their moves. Several teams are pullâ€" ing ahead. In the CEL. league, Village 2 South have decisively won all four of their games, three being ‘shutouts. Right behind are Village 1 West, St. Paul‘s and Village 1 North Stars scrambling for second place. The Blue Bombers with Lesley, Sharon and Janis are determined to claim first place in the NFL. league, â€" although Renison Rats are giving them trouâ€" ble with an excellent quarter back Mary Lou McCarroll and point scorers â€" Jane Larkworthy _ and _ Sharlyn Perera. If you want to see some fast action and great vardage, Village 2 North players, Deb Drake, and Patti â€" McDonald are the ones to watch The girls are enthusastic and are having a good time Come out to see. Any questions or more alties, which mixed up our lines and hurt us quite a bit," said Mespeler coach Don McKee. . _ ‘‘*But I‘ve got to be happy with the way we came back to tie. It was almost like a win in here tonight.‘‘ In the third, Konings got his second goal of the night on a deflection just off the edge of the crease and Dahâ€" mer upped it to 6â€"4 on a reâ€" information â€" contact Leeâ€" Anne Lemmer 884â€"9556. If scores of 0â€"35 or 2â€"38 sound all too familiar to some of you Flag Footâ€" bailers, the convenor thanks you for hanging on till the end. If you‘re not winning, you‘re _ playing _ because you love what the game offers. And that‘s what it‘s all about. The Flag Football season is drawing to a close. I saw some great and some not so great games this fall . MEN‘S FLAG FOOTBALL The Referees did a solid job all around and deserve my congratulations. After all, how many times a week do you get out in the middle of a football field and deal with nearâ€"animals. Fights were kept to a minimum with no need for ambulance service (thus far). There was a first in Flag Football this fall. We had a couple female referees doing guy‘s games and they weren‘t your 300 pound Big Bertha types. Despite their positive physical attributes, they did a good job keepâ€" ing the games under conâ€" trol. The only complaints I got were due purely to the distractive qualities of the womern. Well done guys and gals‘ A summary of the standâ€" ings shows that, in "A" Division, East Quad in Al league and St. Jeromes A bound at 14 :23. . ‘‘I thought Konings playâ€" ed his best game yet for us,‘"‘ said Knisley,. "He‘s a midget age player â€" from Listowel and just played superbly .‘ Rocks refused to lie down and play dead however. Favaro narrowed the gap to one off a goalmouth scramble in front of Waâ€" terloo goalie Don Beaupre and Mike Sicuro tied the game on a slapshot from the point at 18:24 that Beauâ€" pre didn‘t see. _ Waterloo outshot Hespeler 43â€"41 before about 350 fans. Siskins played both weekâ€" end games without the serâ€" vices of defenceman Joe Young (suspension) and Leo McAleney (hurt knee). ‘‘That didn‘t help us eithâ€" er," said Knisley. "Our defense wasn‘t too stable, the guys weren‘t moving the puck out of our end too quickly." *‘‘We took our share of penalties and I thought the ref took ‘long enough to even things up," said Mcâ€" Kee. ‘"We‘ll be looking to beat them tomorrow night (Sunday) in Hespeler. But Siskins turned the tables late in the third perâ€" iod of that game with goals by Dahmer and Newman. Other Siskin markers went in AZ league seem destined for top honours. Both have no losses. What follows them, amounts to a dog race for the remaining playoff spots. North D and West D Alumni lead that pack. to Holbrook, Wilson and Dana Saunders. Sicuro and Doug Friars replied for Hespeler, outshot 29â€"21. Siskins are almost as busy this week as last. Toâ€" night they are home to New Hamburg, while weekend home games will pit them against Hespeler Saturday and Kitchener Sunday. West Quad is really on top of things in B1 league and have piled up a ton of points to go with their 4â€"0 record. This is a hotâ€"headed team which should do well in the playoffs if captain Ron Graham can contain their insolence. In B2 league, the East D Derigibles, a motley colâ€" lection of noâ€"talents surâ€" prised a lot of people esâ€" pecially the convenor with their showing. It‘s hard to argue against a 3â€"0 record and a 65 points for and 6 points against record. From what they tell me they‘re doing it all on flubber, so make way for the steamâ€" rollers. With a front three of close to 800 pounds, there just might be some subâ€" stance to their victories. (continued on page 25)
