Better home care plan urged The province should ex- tend .its home care Realm program to include long term care patients and those who are chronically ill, the Region's health and social services committee has recommended. Advantages include much lower costs in comparison with rates at institutions. pyschological benefits for patients, and a reduction of the problem institutions face in providing enough long-term care beds. Currently, the Region offers "a very useful. but limited" home care pro- gram, reported health and social services commis- sioner Dr. Gerard Evans recently. But it "would have a greatly enhanced value if it were extended to patients chronically ill or requiring long term care." he added. Regional council last Thursday approved the recommendation. The program is com- pletely funded by the prov- ince, indicating it has a high priority with the min- istry of health. reported Dr. Evans. Three pilot programs extending the service have been carried out in the province. "It would appear that the ministry of health is willing to consider ap- proaches from individual areas to develop the ad- ditional chronic and long term care components," he said. Both Regional council, and review commissioner William Palmer agree with the need to have people with local govemment back- ground inv'olved in the cur- rent Regional government review.
