\deal with sudden infant deaths _ Sudden infant death synâ€" drome: now such a common occurrence, it is usually referred to as SIDS. It can happen to any baby at any time. No one knows the cause and it‘s no one‘s fault. *It‘s sometimes called crib death, cot death or SUD (sudden unexplained death). And that‘s exactly what it is. A . healthy wellâ€"caredâ€"for baby usually between the ages of three weeks and 12 months is put to bed. He may be just getting over a mild cold or viral infection. When the parent or sitter peeks in on him a few minâ€" utes or hours later, she finds him dead. It‘s not unusual for the baby to have been examinâ€" ed by the pediatrician the day before and been termed perfectly well. There‘s no way of predicting SIDS and because of this, it can‘t be studied or prevented. Parents‘ shock and grief are unbearable. . Friends and family attempt to offer consolation, but, if they have not been through the same situation, they are of little help. Because of this, a Canaâ€" dian foundation was estabâ€" lished in the fall of 1973 by an English businessman when he arrived in Toronto. His goal was to educate the public with the distribuâ€" tion of printed material. The head office of SIDS is still in Toronto, now under the direction of Dr. Johan Huber, a pathologist at the Hospital for Sick Children. Group meetings are held three times a year, often with a guest speaker who 1 e "~ ~ 6 \('\\:’ 44 _â€" m ..-.E-- ’}j co T BERTA CIANTAR ERIC McCARTHY 13.A . av ane y CAROL LACKENBAUER BOB STAPLETON 8 i L 3 & CS : $ l ’;!I 1389 C is BERTA CIANTAR Claims Rep JEAN NEKLLY | _ TOM CLAYFELD Claims Rep Service Rep Sanice Han Claims Rep RICK WOLSTENKHOLME Sales Rep Claims Rep may be a pediatrician, psyâ€" chiatrist, pathologist or fuâ€" neral director. Films are sometimes shown. SIDS occurs throughout the world. An average of 12 cases a year are brought inâ€" to the Kâ€"W Hospital. Parents reach out for help, but don‘t really know where to turn. So Diane and Rrian Clark, themselves victims of SIDS _ three years ago, have decided to form a chapter in the Kâ€"W The first meeting was held Wednesday evening at the Kâ€"W Hospital and was atâ€" tended by 14 adults. Bob Ross, a chaplain at the Hosâ€" pital; Susan Sims, a repreâ€" sentative of the Toronto chapter and Dr. John Graâ€" bham, a pediatrician at the Hospital spoke on the subâ€" jgect. | 0 _ S _ Dr. Graham pointed out that SIDS is more likely to occur in males, often the first child and usually beâ€" tween twoâ€" and sixâ€"months of age. Frequently the child was preâ€"mature. ; ‘"Findings are generally the same," he said.. ‘"The child was usually asleep. There are signs of muscle spasm but no indication the child was crying before it happened. This is where the problem lies â€" there‘s nothing to alert parents. There may be some froth and mucous around the nose and tiny hemorrhages in the thymus gland" (a large gland in the chest). ' He emphasized the chilâ€" dren appear to be perfectly healthy and that it is virâ€" tually impossible to predict when SIDS is going to ocâ€" Meet the people of the Coâ€"operators WE HAVE MOVED _ TO 450 FREDERICK ST. He compared the situaâ€" tion to an ‘"emotional ampuâ€" tation"‘. Because it is so sudden. and senseless, parâ€" ents cannot be prepared for "Numbness, shock and disbelief set in and this soon leads to a state of lethargy where the parents no longâ€" er care about each other, about their job or even getâ€" ting up in the morning." it. wrong, or what didn‘t I do."" Often this is manifested in intense anger at himself, thinking he was a poor parâ€" ent or this \would never have happened. ‘"*Each partner searches for a ‘scapegoat‘ which is usually their spouse even though they need each other more at this time than ever before," he said. "They blame the doctor, the clergy and everyone having anyâ€" thing to do with their child."" Then feelings of guilt set in where each one asks himself "what did I do Eventually a stage of mourning sets in where they are able to face reality and live without their child. He stressed how much easier it is to reach this level if the parents have someone to relate to â€" someone who has gone through the same tragedy.
