Of the 4,687 registrations, a total of 2,596 managed to find some â€"form of emâ€" ployment over the summer months. **We placed 1,495 students in what we call regular jobs," explained Carollynne Hood, graduate assistant in charge of the Centre. "By regular, we mean emâ€" ployment lasting over five The remaining 1,101 stuâ€" dents were only able to find casual jobs. The number of students applying was approximately the same as last year. A few more men registered and obtained jobs than womâ€" en, but a company is onlyâ€" allowed to ask specifically for male students if the job includes heavy labor with height and weight requireâ€" ments. f ‘"The employers â€" have been just great this sumâ€" mer," says Carollynne. At first, university students were a little reluctant to take partâ€"time jobs but they took them later if there was nothing else. The . jobs ~most eagerly sought were the outdoor types, landscaping or gardâ€" ening, mainly because they are outdoors and the pay is relatively good. Of the total 1,500 univerâ€" sity students placed in some fields, 1,000 of these manâ€" aged to find fullâ€"time work. The Student Centre prides itself on ‘"‘quick service assemblyâ€"line help" and the shortâ€"term jobs usually went to those sitting in the office when the doors openâ€" ed at 8:30. â€" "If it. was a longâ€"term job, we‘d look through the files," says Carollynne. "It‘s the only fair way. But those in the office got preâ€" ference if a company wantâ€" ed someone instantly for shortâ€"term work."‘ Some were fortunate. They went out on a job supâ€" posed to last only two or three days and ended up staying the entire summer. . It‘s the seventh season the Centre has been in operâ€" atton and, as Karen Taylor, head of the placement ofâ€" ficers says, ‘"The employâ€" ers rely on us by now and are willing to hire sight unâ€" seen if it‘s a rush job."‘ If employers are not satisâ€" fied with their student help, they let the Centre know. But this happened only a few times, according to ‘‘They often called up and asked for additional help, so generally they were pleased with our services." The University of Waterâ€" loo‘s Federation of Students experimented this summer with a student employment centre on campus to make job searching easier for students without cars. Cathy â€" Huxtable, comâ€" munity field worker in charge of the centre, is slightly â€" disappointed with the results. s AQUATIC PROGRAMS FAMILY YÂ¥ 13 "P ve. _ for the fall session PREâ€"SCHOOL YOUTH & ADULT CLASSES AVAILABLE.
