The sudden squeal of car brakes is followed by a dull klmk and tinkle of glass falling on the pavement. It's just one more car accident and residents in the apartment building at the corner of Regina and University Streets don’t even a look. Loop and Lakeshore-Lincoln routes. And day and night, including rush hours, two buses are usually found parked on both sides of University Avenue while the drivers enjoy a tete-a-tete and a cigarette. Yet two years ago, the city of Waterloo spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to widen University Avenue into a four- lane beautifully paved road to accommodate the steadily increasing number of cars using this route to and from work each day. waterloo chronicle That‘s fine and so they should have. But what they fail to realize is that Regina Street has also become a favorite route home for many people wishing to avoid the confusion on King or Weber Streets. - g - _ Drivers wait at this intersection to cross University Avenue. But their vision to the west (facing King Street) is totally restricted by a parked bus. This forces them to pull half way out into the middle of a busy street to see if the path is clear. As a re- sult, hundreds of cars stop at this point to make a left-hand turn exactly where cars are trying to decide when the way is clear to cross. Just last Wednesday, a car coming down University was struck by another attempting to cross Regina. It was hit so hard, it swung around and faced the opposite direction. An ambulance arrived to take the passenger to hospital. Why choose such a major intersection for a resting spot for buses? Curious be- cause it suggests that Saltsman is very comfortable with the Liberal majority government. He said he would not run in the new Waterloo riding but in Cambridge instead. He pre- dicted a larger Liberal majority government after the elec- tion and sounded quite content about it. You’d almost think he's ready to jump into bed with the Liberals on their han- dling of the Quebec crisis. Saltsman has represented Waterloo in parliament for ten years. Most people think he's been a good member and feel comfortable with him. The NDP will be hard pressedto find as creditable a candidate for Waterloo when the election does come. These philosophies grow out of the same root. It is a common concern with individual people. The NDP favors advancing individual rights through state intervention and through universal social welfare programs. The Progressive Conservatives favor advancing individual rights through freedom of individual action. By providing the tools to people, they can better provide for themselves and for others by responsible self determination. The state should limit its involvement to protecting those who are not capable of looking after themselves. This is a fundamentally different approach but it is a difference in method only and not in purpose. This explains why a Saltsman can have a broad appeal. His approach is to moderate the extremes of his party's left wing thus tempering their method. ers of Waterloo South where he stands on that right now ... before the next federal election now that he has announced he is going to run again, I think we already know that he supported a questionable survey around the time Dr. Morgenthaler had his case be- fore the courts again to support abortion so that Morgen- thaler would get off, I'd like to know if he wants the drug addicts and marijuana users to get off. too. when they get caught by police in our fair Waterloo county and region.
