. Queens‘s gallery By Dave Johnston A basic element of Verâ€" nanda Vabalis sets the Latâ€" viaâ€"born â€" Canadian â€" artist above her many contemâ€" poraries. At first glance, both the woman and her new galâ€" lery, Queen‘s Gallery, 361 Queen St.S. Kitchener, apâ€" pear much like many modâ€" ern stereotypes. ~ She is rrgddle-aged though appears younger. She is steeped in ethnic character from her stiff, heavilyâ€" accented English to her preference for traditional art and oilâ€"base paints. She radiates an aura of talent and controlled concentration Her gallery and studio loâ€" cated near Courtland Avenâ€" ue and Queen Street also appear standard on the surâ€" face. The onceâ€"stately home has been completely renoâ€" vated with clean, white walls, wellâ€"waxed hardwood floors and gleaming varâ€" nished trim. The gallery has a presâ€" ence, an atmosphere of silent, potential creativity. Though still in its initial design stage, the gallery easily lends itself to become a showcase for excellent art. Mrs. Vabalis came to Canada as an imigrant in 1951 at the age of 18. She already â€" had _ established herself in an artistic caâ€" reer which she continued with studies in fine art at Niagara University. Niaâ€" gara Falls New York and Buffalo University. But that is where the similarity with other artâ€" ists and galleries ends for this extremelyâ€"talented artâ€" ist and instructor. As her artistic techniques improved and expanded through confrontation with many styles, her talents were fulfilled to the opâ€" timum of her potential. She created a style of painting that is uniquely Vernanda Vabalis. * While teaching at Niagara Falls collegiate and comâ€" pleting her Bachelor of Arts degree at Brock University. Mrs. _ Vabalis perfected her style to a point where her paintings were in deâ€" mand for shows both naâ€" tionally and internationally. What is a Vabalis paintâ€" ing? It is a combination of natural artistic talent with a good eye and knowledge of the technical functions of art. These basic elements combined have evolved into simple, â€" yet â€" very _ real pieces. ‘"The â€" most _ important thing is not what you paint. but how you paint.. she explained. "My art is simâ€" ple but it contains the esâ€" sence of what I am painting. If I paint a flower, it will have the fragrance of the flower or if I chose water. it will really flow like liquid does." Mrs. Vabalis says she attains her style through the use of a consistent stroke â€" technique and by mixing all her colours in one mixture. The mixing of colours allows for a conâ€" sistency of tone even in conâ€" trasting shades. she says But. even more unique than her original artistic flair. is the woman‘s artisâ€" Artistâ€"proprietor has noble ethic (Continued on page 23) Vernanda Vabalis, proprietor of the newlyâ€"opened Queen‘s Gallery, 361 Queen St..
