The land for the church was donated by the Doering family. A row of pine trees on each side frame this charming yellow brick structure with a white steeple. The walls are three bricks thick and are laid in five rows of stretchers (the side of the brick shows) and one row of headers (the end of the brick shows). Brick columns, one brick thicker than the walls at the front and rear and between the four windows give strength to the building. By Marg Rowell _ The second in a series of historic churches in Waterloo is found in the hamlet of Erbsville. It is St. Paul‘s Lutheran Church built in 1877. The gothic windows have had their clear glass replaced with blue and amber glass. Twentyâ€" one panes around the edge of the windows are blue. Thirteen interior panes are amber. The date stone is in the gable above the front door. The words are in German, the language of the services until 1939. ~ The steeple is wood, painted white. It is about eighty feet from the ground to the top of the iron cross, that acts as a lightening rod, on its peak. The steeple has arched openings in the belfry. These openings are louvered. The two bells are rung on Sundays and for funerals. The roof is covered in patterned wooden shingles. Historic Watcrioo The interior has been completely renovated. The wide pine floor boards were covered over with narrow oak flooring. The pine pews were replaced. The original pulpit was originally reached by stairs, but it is much lower now. The ceiling is covered by modern acoustical tiles. However, the old light fixtures remain. They are somewhat ornate with large pale yellow glass globes. A rear entrance, washrooms and basement were added in 1952. The handâ€"turned cherry communion rail was put back in during recent years. The altar is a magnificent wood carving. It was the Globe Furâ€" niture company‘s showpiece. The church bought it when the company ceased operations. The organ pibes are non-fimctioning and conâ€" ceal speakers for the electronic organ. The steep stairs to the balcony are near the entrance on the right, The ash wood is grained to resemble oak. The pine floors are painted and the pine pews are grained and stained dark. The balcony has not been renovated. This is the second church for this congregation. The original one was built of log a little distance away. As Erbsville grows, perhaps an addition will have to be built or maybe a third church will be necessary.
