They were from 1,066 high schools - also a record number and the first time more than 1,009 schools have parti- cipated. The schools were from every province in Canada except New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. A Newfoundland school was _entered this year for the Hirst time and also, schools were entered from the Northwest Territories. _- And there was still another "first" - this year for the first time the contest be- came an international event, with the entry of a grade 11 student. The contest is open to high school students under 17 (as of Dec. 31, 1970) in grades nine, 10 and 11.
