‘‘There are many situaâ€" tions in industry and govâ€" ernment where the ability to come up with a matheâ€" matical solution to a probâ€" lem is very _ important indeed,"" says Prof. McGee. ‘"This involves making a number _ of _ simplifying assumptions, but the simâ€" plifications have to be done in such a way that the results of your calculations can be put to use. You have to be able to use them to interpret and to predict "In other words. the more closely the mathemaâ€" ticrian‘s assumptions â€" corâ€" respond to the real world He notes that it is not the function of the program to qualify people for profesâ€" sional engineering certifiâ€" cation through the Associaâ€" tion of Professional Enâ€" gineers of Ontario. ‘‘Our hope is that these engineering electives will equip these students to interact better with the technological and scienâ€" tific _ community," _ says Prof. Beaumont. ‘"We are not educating them to become pseudo engineers. They will be applied matheâ€" maticians. But they should be able to relate better to the real life problems of the engineer." Basically, the packages consist of a core of matheâ€" matics subjects plus a variety _ of _ engineering subjects that are to be taken as "electives." ‘""The _ students _ would have been able to take the courses all along," agrees Prof. Ian McGee, also of applied math. *‘*However, they would have had to make the appropriate seâ€" lections themselves and in truth. many of them would never _ have â€" appreciated the advantages of these particular selections." "It‘s a new experience for us," admits Prof. Arâ€" thur Beaumont, chairman of the department. "Particuâ€" larly since these students are involved . in a rather special program that hasn‘t existed until now." There is nothing new about the subjects they are taking, he hastens to add; they‘ve been availâ€" able for years. What‘s new is the idea of offering them as a package arrangeâ€" ment, and tieing the packâ€" age in with the coâ€"op sysâ€" tem. The applied math departâ€" ment _ enrolled â€" its first ‘‘*coâ€"opers"" last September. At present al} 30 of them are off on work terms. initiates coâ€"op study program (Coâ€"op _ programs _ are those in which students alâ€" ternaté _ between _ their campus studies and work terms in industry, business or in public service, usually every four months. They take longer to complete their programs but the students get some work exâ€" perience, plus income, as they move along . ) Math faculty Though the University of Waterioo‘s faculty of mathematics has been ofâ€" fering _ coâ€"operative proâ€" grams for 10 years one of its departments, the deâ€" partment of applied matheâ€" matics, has ‘"goneâ€"coâ€"op * for the first time this year. â€" Waterloo Chronicle, Wednesday, April 6, 1977 By then, it is hoped, the students will have some idea as to what enâ€" gineering areas they wish to specialize in. They can choose one of five availâ€" able packages of engineerâ€" ing options. These are: (1) an option relating to ""structural and solid mechanics‘‘ offered jointly by the departments of civil and mechanical engineerâ€" ing:;: (2) a "physical sysâ€" tems analysis and syntheâ€" sis"° option offered through the department of systems design; (3) a "thermo fluid _ mechanics‘" option offered by the department of mechanical engineering; (4) a "devices, networks and communications‘" opâ€" tion offered through the department of electrical engineering and (5) a ‘‘power systems and conâ€" trol""* option also offered through the department of electrical engineering. Even when it comes to mathematics per se, the students will be encouragâ€" ed to get a broad perspecâ€" tive, Prof. Beaumont says. They will be encouraged to take computer science, statistics and _ optimizaâ€" tion subjects, as well as those taught within the department of _ applied mathematics which _ inâ€" clude fluid dynamics, relâ€" ativity, quantum mechanâ€" ics and differential equaâ€" tions. Students on work terms at this time are with a number of wellâ€"known somâ€" panies ...IBM,. Inco, Genâ€" eral Motors and Gulf Oil. to name but a few. Some are also with the civil service in Ontario. An important group of studies within the departâ€" ment of applied matheâ€" matics involves students in learning to build matheâ€" matical models that can be applied to real life situâ€" ations. That is, for the group who came into the program last September and who are now on work terms, the first engineering opâ€" tions will be available beâ€" ginning in January, 1978. ‘‘We received a great deal of assistance from enâ€" gineering,"‘ he says. The point is, once the student has made his or her selection there is no switching back and forth. The student will have to stick with it. Students. will not begin taking their engineering electives until they have completed two work terms. use in coming up with a nice, neat â€" mathematical solution that can‘t be apâ€" plied."‘ Prof. _ Beaumont _ says that _ before _ launching the new program, which is a four year honours proâ€" gram, he spent several months visiting potential employers of the students, finding _ out what their needs are. The program was discussed at considerâ€" able length within both his faculty and the Faculty of Engineering, he says. the better his solutions will be as far as the e?ineer is concerned There‘s nn All over the world families rejoice as they come together in fervent prayer and thoughtful contemplation.
