_ Minoan art is featured _ at UW gallery Following his 20th century excavations at Knossos, Sir Arthur Evans used the term *"Minoan", after the mythical King Minos from the ancient Greek legend, to describe this art. Subâ€" sequent Cretan discoveries have shown a long and disâ€" tinct development quite separate from the betterâ€" known Mycenaenart of the Greek mainland. Minoan art can be divided into three In the Bronze Age in the Mediterranean area, a reâ€" markable civilization flourâ€" ished on the Island of Crete. Although the people of this area had contact with the Near East (Asia and Egypt) their art shows striking originality, and is considerâ€" ed to have contributed to the introductory period of early Greek art. Mr. Cameron has publishâ€" ed many articles on this stbject, and atâ€" present is preparing a lectureâ€"tour in the United States at the inâ€" vitation of the Archaeologiâ€" cal Institute of America. In the Gallery from March 10 to April 3, new restoraâ€" tion drawings of Minoan frescoes, photographs and motifs, diagrams and a model of a decorated room will be on display. These are the work of Mark Camâ€" eron, Associate Professor of the Department of Visual Arts, University of Western Ontario, who did postâ€"gradâ€" uate studies at the Univerâ€" sity of Athens and has done extensive archeological field work in Greece. Art from the Bronze Age, from the Island of Crete... artifacts from Parkhill, an ancient Indian site in southâ€" western Ontario ... weaving from West Africa ... artiâ€" facts from North America, Africa and the South Paâ€" cific ... all these make up new displays coming into the Art Gallery and the lobâ€" by display cases in the Modâ€" ern Languages building, UW campus in March. Photographs and speciâ€" mehs of the strikirng and unique West African narâ€" row loom weaving will ocâ€" cupy another of the cases. In addition to its artistic value, narrow loom weaving has been of political and ecâ€" onomic importance in West Africa for centuries. Also being shown, souvenirs and artifacts collected by UW anthropologists during their work with peoples of North America, Africa and the South Pacific. MARK CAMERON will give a SLIDEâ€"LECTURE on March 10th at 1:30 p.m. This is open to the public and admission is free. The total destructionâ€" of the palaces, and the decline and fall of the civilization occurred between 1400 and 1100 B.C. Most of the restorâ€" ation work in this exhibition dates from the late Minoan period, while some illustraâ€" tions are from the latter part of the Middle Minoan. â€" In the Modern Languages building _ display _ cases, March 1 to 27, the UW Anâ€" thropology department has assembled interesting exhibits of peoples from other places and times.
