A noted teacher. lecturer and writer on all phases of plant propaga- tion. he is a long-time con- sultant to both amateur and professional horticulturists alike. Patients are referred to London, Hamilton or Toronto if an angiography is warrant- During the exercise cardiogram, the patient straddles the machine and hangs on to a bar in front of him. The treadmill is then started up slow- ly. The patient begins'to walk on the treadmill to establish a comfortable pace, then lets go of the bar. This is called the warm-up stage. The Waterloo County Chapter of th'e Ontario Heart Foundation is very proud of the work be- ing accomplished by the Stress Lab at K-W Hos- pital. Dr. Ron Fowlis. a specialist of internal med. icine says this is a relatively new procedure at the hospital used to analyze potential coronary vic- tims. In its one-year of existence, more than 350 patients have been analyzed at the K-W Stress Lab. “Now take a long stride and relax," Dr. Fowlis assuringly tells the patient. .“That‘s it. The electrocardiogram (EKG l is a means of measuring the electrical activity of the heart beat. the patient's response to exercise, as well as other changes that may be taking place within the heart. During the pre-exercise assessment, the patient is in a resting position while a routine cardiogram is taken. The actual test is an exercise cardiogram. taken while the patient exercises on a basic, motor- ized treadmill. - There are two steps' to the analysis: pre-exer~ cise assessment and monitoring of the patient's heart beat during exercise.
