As a member of the OFSA we an- , bound by the Assot.iation's strict "Code of Ethical Practices", Your assuranu' of only the highest In professional standards You now have a fire extinguisher that will ex- tinguish any type of fire in the home. depending on the size of the source. Now the size. I recom- mend is a 5 pound A.B.C. type fire extinguisher. Anything smaller than that will not provide ade- quate time for fire fighting purposes. Baking soda, sprinkled carefully over a small fire on top of the stove will smother it and elim- inate any further hazards. Unfortunately not all fires are small enough to allow you to get close enough to sprinkle the baking soda, without burn- ing yourself or setting your clothes on fire. Or possibly that old box of baking soda you have for fire fighting' purposes is now hard and would {all on a grease fire in chunks. This could spread the fire and splash you with hot grease. - The frying pan lid will also smother the fire, but again you must get too close for comfort. The kitchen is not only your area of concern. Try putting out a Chesterfield fire with a frying pan lid. Get the point! You need a portable fire ex- tinguisher in your house. Before we look at fire extinguishers. you must be aware these are various classifications of fires in the house. Without going into great detail, there are three types of fires you might encounter. They are as follows: Class A - combustible products eg. paper, wood. cloth, etc., Class B - flammable liquids eg. gasoline, varsol. paint. etc., Class C - electrical eg. electrical appliances. electrical services. etc.. We all know you must never use water on a grease (Class B) or electrical tClass C i type fire. but water is very effective on combustible prod- ucts (Class Al. Did you know that a majority of fire extinguishers are only rated for flammable IClass Bl or electrical (Class C) type fires! You can see that in order to have an effective all round extinguisher for the home. it must be rated A.B.C. - multi-purpose. A multi-purpose will have marked on the label A.B.C. type fire ex- tinguisher, Be sure the extinguisher is approved in Can- ada. An approved extinguisher must have a label stating - U.L.C. approved lUnderwriters Lab- oratories of Canada). Many extinguishers sold in hardware and department stores in this area have only a U.L.I. approval. This extinguisher is tested in the United States and does not meet the standard U.L.C, demands. Stick with a Canadian approved extinguisher. it will pay off in the end. Have your new ex- tinguisher checked every year to ensure the ex- tinguisher is functioning. If it has lost pressure or if you use it at any time. it must be serviced immediately. Service charges are as follows, Inspection ap- proximately $2. If the extinguisher must be filled and recharged. it will cost approximately $10, if your extinguisher is ULC. approved and if you never used it to extinguish a fire. chances are you will never have to have it recharged. Finally. placement of your new extinguisher, Hang it on a wall so all can reach it, Keep it centrally located as fires can occur anywhere in the home. They are simple to operate. read the instructions carefully and instruct all family members m the use at it, My choice. a 5 pound - multrpurpose A.B.C.- U.L.C. approved. type fire extinguisher - ap- proximate cost - $25 to $30.
