On the University of Waâ€" terloo campus this spring. researchers actually drillâ€" edâ€" a hole down to bedrock. They struck it at 150 feet, and then kept.going, through shale, for another 20 feet. The project was under the direction of Dr. Paul Karrow of the earth sciences departâ€" ment and was part of a long STARBURST TWEED in red. beige. Sq. YÂ¥d. SqQ. YD. stardust. orange. sapphire. The drilling this spring has two major objectives: (1) to find out what‘s down there, and (2) to provide an outdoor labâ€" oratory for UW‘s earth sciences students. As for finding out what‘s down there. . .it‘s mostly clay, Dr. Karrow reports. From a preliminary ex; amination he has learned that there have been five different â€" glacial periods over this part of Ontario in the past 75,000 years; there are five separate glaâ€" cial deposits, the most recent of which dates back about 14,000 years. As for the "lab," the drill hole will continue to be used by earth sciences students. and particularly by those studying geo physics under the superâ€" vision of Dr. John Greenâ€" house. § Sugg. SALE iâ€" _ ‘"The students will learn 0 _ to measure the radioactivity g of the various soil l%fers," T says Dr. Karrow. "They‘li it _ also learn about the elecâ€" ) _ trical resistance of the soil JÂ¥ â€" materials John Greenâ€" house has found, for inâ€" stance, that certain clay layers have more radioâ€" activity than others." One way of studying the soil is to hammer on the ground from above,. then pick up reflections of the shock waves. ‘*We hope we can leave the hole for years, using it to demonstrate geophysical equipment and its uses," Dr. Karrow says: Among the things they learned from it: (1) There is little sand under UW‘s chemistry 1 building, exâ€" cept at the very surface of the soil (though Waterloo County is in general someâ€" what renowned for its sand hills); <2) there are no aquifers (though the City of Waterioo draws part of its water supply from a well just a few hundred feet away, beside Laurel Creek ; (3) there was little trouble from boulders; (4) there was no problem with water under pressure; (4) the bedrock turned out to be as expected â€" shale. They have carefully reâ€" corded and preserved core samples from the drilling operation and a postâ€"doctorâ€" al fellow. Stephen Fritz, is interested in looking into the sulphate content of these. He is trying to assess where sulphur in the groundâ€" water came from. This is interesting because so much of the subsoil in Waterloo County is characterized by the presence of limestone,. rather than suiphates. The hardness of the water. for instance. is attributed to limestone. deposited ages ago by glacial action. A graduate student. Andy Isherwood. is involved with the project as part of a study he is doing on the glaâ€" cial geology of the UW campus. ‘"There have been hunâ€" dreds of drillings here in connection with the erection of the various building on campus." says Dr. Karrow. "and he is using the data collected to buildâ€"up _ a threeâ€"dimensional picture of what is under the ground. Of course. most of : these dr'\l)l- ings only went down 20 ‘or 30 feet." * Dr._ Karrow knows of one other hole on campus which has gone down to bedrock. It is not far from the hole they have just comâ€" pleted. but it struck bedâ€" rock at 100 feet which means there is about a 50 DICK CLINE Service worthy of your confidenceâ€" a tradition since 1925 foot drop in the bedrock beâ€" tween that site and the presâ€" ent one. (That hole. moreâ€" over. was simply for water supply: the hole just comâ€" pleted has provided comâ€" plete core samples all the way down.) Spectators watch University af Waterloo researchers drilling a hole down to bedrock to provide an outdoor laboratory for UW‘s earth sciences students. Still, a number of the prevâ€" ious holes have revealed inâ€" teresting things about the campus. For example â€" the site of the present enginâ€" eering lecture hall was once a lake. later filled in by a glacier. (Small wonâ€" der the building is comâ€" monly referred to on camâ€" pus as "the submarine °! ) : l KITCHENERAWATEALOO LIMITED Waterloo As noted. the bedrock itâ€" Kitchener Ontario & Duke Sts. self proved to be merely shale. No fabulous gold deposits that might help the university solve its financial problems‘ _ But Dr. Karrow didn‘t expect there would be. Still it‘s nice to know what is there. and More than 2.000 custom vans from across North America are expected to gather at Bingeman Park July 30, 31 and August 1 for Van competition will be held July 30 Waterloo Square possibly also how it got there.
