wl _ _ Humour is used very effectively in the play. When writâ€" _ing "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg*", Peter Nichols realizâ€" ed the play would be too serious and therefore less effective without some laughter. - . ; By Dave Johnston ___ ~UUL ‘"A Day in the Death of Joe Egg*‘, the second presentation of the Waterloo Summer Theatre Company is a very movâ€" ing tale. It‘s the kind of play that demands attention. Playing in the Theatre of the Arts, University of Waterâ€" too, June 10â€"13 and June 17â€"20 at 8 p.m., "Joe Egg** is about the frustrations of parents of a multiâ€"handicapped child. The play draws the audience into the plot .by having certain scenes from the child‘s early life acted out by the parents Sheila (Anne Sneickus) and Bri (W.R. Chadwick). The parâ€" ents show the audience how they discovered the child‘s conâ€" dition and how the medical profession and other friends reâ€" Josephine is played by Judy Barrettâ€"Lennard, a tenâ€"yearâ€" old student at Winston Churchill public school. Although the role of Josephine requires no dialogue, it demands a high livel of concentration to project the serious handicaps of the child. i . Judy Barrettâ€"Lennard is convincing as Josephine. It is obvious that the girl spent much time learning the physical characteristics of such an illness. She conveys Josephine‘s handicaps to the audience without making the situation seem overdone. Her dramatization of spastic attacks is vivid enough to get the point across. s Anne Sneickus and W.R. Chadwick deserve the highest praise for their efforts on opening night. The emotions they displayed during the play drew the audience into the probâ€" lem. When speaking directly to the audience, the initial speech by Mr. Chadwick (Bri) is perhaps a little choppy. The best result of "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg‘‘ is that it allows the audience to view the problems of raising a multiâ€"handicapped child from every viewpoint. There is the position of the parents as seen through Sheila and Bri, the rich philanthropist Freddie played by Dean Barringâ€" ton, the upperâ€"class woman Pam, played by Grace Newton who believes everything imperfect should be hidden from sight; and the doting grandmother who is more worried about herseff, played by Patricia Nember. Through the roles of each character, new light is shed on the frustrations of having a handicapped child. The audiâ€" ence can evaluate the viewpoints of each character in a manner that will effect their opinion at the end of the play. And it is the fact that the audience is left wondering ""What would I do in the same circumstance‘‘ that makes "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg*‘ a very human play. SUID% When compared against the plots of most movies playing locally, it is refreshing to see a presentation that demands evaluation of a real life situation. Joe Egg is effective beâ€" cause it could happen to anyone, and as Bri mentions, it does happen. A multiâ€"handicapped child is born every eight hours and every eight hours "Joe Egg*‘‘ begins in someone‘s real life. f Joe EggJ uomes enlightens Je non audiences $ > A °B 4 // e e Pnd / Y3 badhat â€" o ); y yi", e AM 0e A WESTER Nite â€" Lite Appearing This weekend AND HOT Bridge St., Kitchener in the ’ FREE BABYSITTING SERVICE Monday to Saturday , * Make your free time a fun time with Fats Domino in the Keller Room at Waterioo Motor Inn. 475 KING NORTH, WATERLOO, PHONE 884â€"0220 at the north end of Conestoga Parkway and King North in Waterioo â€" enter from King Street or Weber Street North y £¥AIEKLOOQâ€"| %OTOR:GE\(_I\(J e 2 SHOWS NIGHTLY TICKETS AT THE @ ADMISSION FOR TWO TO THE FATS DOMINO SHOW Tussday, Wednesday, © OVERRNGHT ACCOMMODATION FOR TwO Thureday, Friday, @FULL COURSE BREAKFAST FOR Two / Sfdaarsdd momen ce p sys wwtan l I z.
