Erdman, Fischer chosen to compete at Olympics Fischer and Erdman, gold medal winners at the 1975 Panâ€"American Games in Mexico City, defeated opâ€" ponents in the middleweight and light middle weight classes to achieve their Olympic berths. Fischer had the fight in his mid the toughest middleweight category of 176 pounds as he narrowly defeated Gary Hirose of British Columbia. Hirose led on points through the first five minutes of the final match but sixâ€"time Caâ€" nadian champion Fischer rallied to win. Erdman won his first round bout against Greig Lyon of BC and defeated Robert Varga in the final. The two Waterloo athletes have been training full-tin;e in Montreal for the past few years.
