Such is the advice of Prof. G. Hofstra and other, environmental biologists at the University of Guelph. White cedar, like other evergreen shrubs. is es- pecially susceptible to salt spray damage. Every spring roadside trees and shrubs show the result of salt spray whip- ped up by traffic during the winter months. For several years a group of scientists at the Uni- versity of Guelph has been interested in the effect of salt spray on roadside plants. The first study, funded by the Ontario min- istry of highways, revealed a general pattern of injury; although damage is more severe on the side facing the road and especially pronounced on the down- wind side of the highway. Branches covered with snow are often free from injury and plants further from the road receive less dam- age. yet injury has been detected in plants 500 feet from the roadside. The needles of injured evergreens turn brown, and over several years, the branches become bare and the plant takes on a one- sided appearance. Salt spray kills the new buds and young twigs on de- cidious trees. Affected branches have new growth at the base of the branch only, giving the plant a characteristic tufted ap- pearance: say the Guelph researchers. Two years ago, much of the research on salt spray damage included the test- ing of protectant, especial- ly waxy or latex substances sprayed on the twigs and needles. Such protectants have now been discarded as ineffective. Guelph horticulturist Prof. G.P. Lumis listed several sprays still sold commercially which may be useful for other things, says Prof. Lumis. but not he says, as a protectant against salt spray. Since these water-based substances break down quickly, they must be ap- plied every two wegs 0n- tario winters do t pro- vide the weather conditions necessary for this appli- cation. A good snow fence will provide as much or more protection. says Prof . Hofstra. Both Prof. Lumis and Prof. Hofstra agree there is no effective way to pro- tect plants from salt spray. The best solution is to choose trees and shrubs that are least susceptible to damage. Good choices from the decidious trees are Norway Maple, Horse chestnut and Honey bo- trust. (The Ontario ministry of agriculture and food pro- vides a factsheet describ- ing the salt spray symptoms and including a species list of trees and shrubs rated for their resistance to airborne highway salt spray. Write to the OMAF and ask for AGDEX 275/ There may be feasible alternatives to salt as a snow removal method. One suggestion is the use of a rotary broom to sweep the snow away. This is being used on campus at the University of Guelph, and Prof. Hofstra says it does a much better job than the conventional blade. It is not likely to be adopted by the provincial department of highways, says Prof. Hofstra, because salt is just too readily available, too cheap and too easy to apply. This winter, Prof. Hofstra hopes to conduct a study along the newest section of Guelph's Hanlon Express- way. Just opened in No- vember, little salt has yet been applied there. By studying the amount of salt used and the resulting spray damage in one year's time, Prof. Hofstra hopes to learn more about how plants react to the spray. For example, past research would indicate that most damage occurs in Febru- ary and March and that weather conditions. es- pecially rainfall, affect the amount of damage from yeartoyear. As a point of interest to property owners, Prof. Hofstra notes that salt spray damage is regarded as a natural hazard, mak- ing it impossible to re- ceive compensation from government or most in- surance companies. Joint meeting A joint meeting of the Region and the Board of Commissioners of Police will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7, 7:30 pm. in the council chambers. Mars- land Centre. Waterloo. Council's city of the whole was invited to attend the meeting, along with councils of the Townships of Welles- ley and Woolwich. Mem- bers of the public are also invited to attend. The purpose of the meet- ing is to seek public feed- back regarding proposals to reduce costs by decrease ing police service in a num- ber of areas. These include pay-roll escorts; security check of commercial and residential premises; in- vestigating only reportable accidents under the High- way Traffic Act; escort of prisoners; court officers; reducing patrol and en- forcement of municipal by- laws, _ cial statements if desired.
