It will also give the students an opportunity to demonstrate their talents and organizational abilities in areas unrelated to aca- demics. “We don't expect expert help from anybody." says Ed Laryea. organizer and head of languages. "The food is being entirely-pre- pared by the students and some are presenting skits. .. About 100 students are volunteering their time and talents for the event. Un- fortunately. when the event was planned back m the summertime. it coin- cided with exams being held this week. For this reason. students have been unable to spend a lot of time practising as they have either been studying or writing exams. "I don't want to put ex- pectations on the kids.” says Mr Laryea. Although the Kitchener- Waterloo area is reknown for its historical German background, a 1971 Statis- tics Canada survey shows over 45 ethnic groups in the area. says Mr. Laryea. "One of the most im- portant things in the world is to talk to someone in their language." he says. "I think you get to under- stand people better. just by talking to them.
