Wateiloo Region will get a Better Business Bureau January 5, 1976. This announcement was made Friday at a press conference in Kitchener by John Bowman, chairman of the business and con- sumer affairs committee of the Kitchener chamber of commerce. The new bureau, which will share office space with the Kitchener chamber at 68 King St. East, will be managed by Kitchener alderman. Frank Hoddle. Regional Better Business Bureau will open January s Representatives from chambers of commerce in Kitchener, Waterloo. Cam- bridge and Elmira were present at the meeting Fri- day but several chamber managers claimed they had no advance knowledge of the bureau's establishment. Betty Faichney. manager of the Cambridge chamber, said “We haven't been api preached and the matter hasn't even been discussed with us. We don't even know if we are in favour of it." Representatives of small chambers in the outlying areas of the region also expressed fear at the meet- ing Friday that the Better Business Bureau would siphon off some of their financial support from local businessmen. "When you come to our membership, we have to come to the conclusion that we're going to be in com- petition with you." said Jack Tabbert, president of the Elmira chamber of commerce. "The history so far is that the Better Business Bureau has not taken away from local chambers. Nat- urally there is concern be- cause we are all going to the same group for fund- ing. But history has ab- solutely contradicted this," he said. Mr. Collett also claimed that the major funding of the regional office would probably come from the K-W area but the buremfs services would benefit consumers and business- men from the whole region. The bureau will provide consumer information about local businessmen, review consumer complaints and seek solution of disputes. monitor advertising and trade practices to "main- tain honesty in the market- place" and keep a file on all businesses in the region. of the breeders tried. The next evening while out walking their dog they came upon another person exercising a Golden Re- triever male. A conversa- tion was engaged and before long it was agreed that this would be the sire of their dog's pups. It will be subsidized for the first year to a year-and- a-half by the national or- ganizing body. the Better Business Bureau of Canada. He said the regional bur- eau should be self-support- ing in a year with member- ship dues paid by local bus- inessmen who join the or- ganization. __ Membership fees will be assessed on a sliding scale. " Managers of the Cam- bridge and Waterloo cham- bers of commerce ques- tioned. the need for a Bet- ter Business Bureau that would provide consumer advice for cities. They said local chambers were already adequately filling this need. "One of the strongest ser- vices of the Cambridge chamber is to protect the consumer. We're proud of our record. We feel we've done a darned good Job," said Mrs. Faichney. man- ager of the Cambridge chamber. "We feel we're doing a good job in this area." said "Speck" Turner, secretary- manager of the Waterloo chamber. John Bowman. a member of the steering committee piloting the bureau towards incorporation in January, said "One of the major reasons we're going region- al is that we are a regional shopping area. If we're serving these areas we must have the support of the business community in the whole area. Some chamber managers also criticized the organ- izers of the Better Business Bureau for including only Kitchener residents on the bureau's steering commit- to advertise again. In my last conversation with this party, it was men- tioned that "There sure isn't any money in raising purebred dogs: we'll never do it again." Price? Your guess is as good as mine! If a satisfactory agreement is not worked out between the businessman and the consumer. the Better Bus- iness Bureau can arrange to have a mediator handle the dispute. Mediation is undertaken if one of the parties involved agrees to accept the med- iator‘s findings as binding. However. "you don't get many mediation cases," said Mr. Collett. The Better Business Bur- eau will also keep files on local businesses, recording how individual firms re- spond to consumer com- plaints. This information will be given to consumers who telephone the bureau requesting information on specific companies. In answering these queries bureau staff are forbidden to recommend specific companies or provide credit information said Mr. Col- lett.
