Although the University of Waterioo has for many years had a safety program, involving a safety policy and a safety procedures manual, there have been continuing efforts to upâ€" grade it. One such effort consisted of a comprehensive indusâ€" trial vision survey on camâ€" pus. The survey involved 50 students of UW‘s School of Optometry, the _ only English language school of optometry in Canada. The students surveyed 25 labs and workshops on campus. This survey, orâ€" ganized by Dr. Robert Scholefield, visiting proâ€" fessor, and Nick Ozaruk, director of safety, covered four main areas: eye examiâ€" nations for 150 staff memâ€" bers; an analysis of the visual needs of the tasks being performed; an analyâ€" sis of lighting levels in the various job stations and an analysis of visual hazards. While the eye examinaâ€" tions revealed few new problems there were a numâ€" ber that would presumably have gone unattended otherâ€" wise. One staff member, for example, was immediâ€" ately referred to a Kitchenâ€" er â€" Waterioo ophthalmoloâ€" gist when it was discovered he had an eye ailment. It healed easily, but attention was drawn to the fact that Beginning Monday, Nov. 17, 1975 FOR EMPLOYERS Dial 578â€"2380 For Other CMC Services 579â€"1550 NEW HOURS Industrial vision survey proves worthwhile CANADA MANPOWER CENTRES AT 232 King St. North, WATERLOO Will Be OPEN 8 :30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday 29 Duke St. East, KITCHENER Manpower and Immigration Need small household repairs and don‘t know who to call? The new glasses have lenses for closeâ€" up work at the top as well as at the bottom, so he can look down for closeâ€"up work ; look straight ahead for disâ€" tance, and look up again for closeâ€"up work. The arrangeâ€" ment of his work station makes this an ideal optical arrangement. A worker in a Faculty of Science lab was advised to have his eyes examined every six months when the survey revealed a radiation there was a possible link between the ailment and conditions of his job. As for the visual requireâ€" ments of the various tasks being done, the students found most of these preâ€" sented no problems, though there were some jobs on which they recommended individuals with color vision defects should not be emâ€" ployed. Many â€" recommendations concerned lighting levels. There were suggestions for more illumination in conâ€" nection with a number of work stations. In a few inâ€" stances, window curtains SERVICES du Canada Mainâ€"d‘cauvre et immigration were recommended to elimiâ€" nate glare on working surâ€" faces on sunny days. The analysis of visual hazards led to a variety of recommendations, the most were recommended for common of which related to the use of safety glasses. Glasses were recommendâ€" ed where none had previousâ€" ly been used. Side shields were recommended where there were hazards from flying chips from nearby machines.
