Gold medals honoring academic achievement will be presented to eight graduâ€" ates of the University of Waterloo each year beâ€" ginning with the 1976 conâ€" vocation, it was announced Monday at the November meeting of the UW Senate. New gold medals honoring students The gold medals, valued at almost $200 each, are being provided by the Uniâ€" versity of Waterloo Alumni Association to recognize academic excellence. They will be awarded to a student from each of the six faculâ€" ties who has demonstrated outstanding academic perâ€" formance on completion of an undergraduate degree program ; to the top student receiving a Master‘s degree and to the leading Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) graduâ€" ate. A recent visitor to the campus was Dr. Eduard Gaugler, rektor (president) of the University of Mannheim, West Germany. UW and WLU have had an exchange agreement with Mannheim, now in its fourth year, which sees students from the two Waterloo campuses spending a year there, obtainâ€" Each medal will be awardâ€" ed on the recommendation of the Dean of the faculty involved or by the Dean of Graduate Studies, said Philâ€" ip J. Musclow, alumni secreâ€" David A. Hayhoe, O.D., a clinic resident on the UW campus, will be leaving shortly to spend a year as a lecturer at Benin City; UW has received a grant from the Canadian International Development Agency to proâ€" vide for these services. Dr. Edward J. Fisher, former director of the UW school. currently _ on _ sabbatical leave. will spend January. 1976, at the University of Benin. Foreign eye program aid The University of Waterâ€" loo‘s School of Optometry, the only Englishâ€"language school of optometry in Canâ€" ada, is providing assistance to the University of Benin, in Nigeria where a new optometry program is being established.
