The University of Waterâ€" loo has begun providing a service â€" converting gradâ€" uate chemists into chemical engineers. ‘"We‘d had a number of inquiries from â€" graduate chemists working in indusâ€" try who for a variety of reaâ€" sons wanted to become proâ€" fessional engineers," says Prof. _ Robert _ Hudgins, associate chairman of the department of chemical engineering and one of the organizers of the new proâ€" gram. We felt if we made a selection of appropriate courses it should be posâ€" sible for such people to pick up what they need in a couple of fourâ€"month terms on campus. Obviously, the graduate chemist has all the chemistry and most of the mathematics needed; what he or she would have to pick up would be the ‘engineerâ€" ing‘ content." In broad terms, the disâ€" tinction between a chemist and a chemical engineer is that the chemist studies chemistry and the engineer applies the knowledge. ‘"Let‘s say, the chemist finds out what happens when you mix a couple of chemâ€" icals â€" together and the chemical engineer designs a production unit or a plant for doing it on a commerâ€" cial scale," Mr. Hudgins explains. ‘"The chemical enâ€" gineer has to know a fair amount of chemistry though the chemist may not know too much about engineerâ€" ing."‘ A common arrangement within universities is to have chemistry taught in a faculâ€" ty of science and chemical engineering taught in a facâ€" ulty of school of engineering ; the chemist gets a bachelor of science (B.Sc.) degree and the chemical engineer gets a bachelor of applied science (B.A.Sc.) or bachâ€" elor of engineering (B. Eng. ) degree. Those coming into the new UW program must have at least an honors (four year) bachelor of science degree in chemistry, or in some related field such as chemical physics. If posâ€" sible they should have had A Remembrance Day service was held yesterday at the Waterloo Cenotaph to place wreaths for those who died during the two World wars and the Korean war. © e © UW introducing new service QOne may enter the proâ€" gram at either the first of May (spring term) or the first of September (fall term). Some of these jobs, it is expected, will be arranged through UW‘s coâ€"ordination departâ€" ment, the department that arranges work term jobs for all UW coâ€"operative students. Waterloo is Canada‘s first ‘‘coâ€"op"‘ university â€" many of its students are on coâ€"op programs and alterâ€" nate between campus and jobs every four months through _ their _ academic programs. _ All students will then reâ€" turn for a second fourâ€" 120 King Street South. This means students comâ€" ing in at the first of May, 1976, will spend the Sepâ€" temberâ€"December _ period on work terms and will have completed their programs by the end of April, 1977. He is confident the new program is ‘"more than sufâ€" ficient‘‘ to permit students to gain recognition through the Association of Profesâ€" sional Engineers of Onâ€" tario (APEO) as profesâ€" sional engineers; that is, to achieve APEO‘s "P. As is their cusâ€" tom, the APEO will indiâ€" vidually evaluate the acaâ€" demic backgrounds of apâ€" plicants for the P.Eng. ‘‘Indeed, we have two students in the program and both indicate they want to go that wayâ€"continue on for a master‘s degree here,"‘ he reports. The department is also offering its own diploma to students who successfully complete the program (this is not a UW senateâ€"apâ€" proved degree or diploma). Mr. Hudgins says the deâ€" partmental diploma will be regarded within the department as qualifying holiders for graduate work there.
