Accessability guide published That‘s the conclusion of Dean Mellway, the coorâ€" dinator of Project Mobility which surveyed more than 1,000 buildings in the area this summer for the disâ€" abled. Kitchener â€" Waterloo is far from being an accessiâ€" ble city for people in wheelâ€" chairs. "‘I would estimate less than 20 percent and even closer to 10 percent of the buildings .we surveyed are accessible,"‘ he said. ‘‘Basically we‘re a long way from being an accessiâ€" ble city but we‘re going in the right direction.‘"‘ Mr. Mellway made the remarks this week as the results of the survey were released to the public in book form entitled, An Accessibility Guidebookâ€" of Kitchenerâ€"Waterioo. Mr. Mellway, conducted the survey with three other disabled â€" students, Kathy Weatherall, Darryl Horst and Bob McLellan, with the assistance of an Opportunâ€" ities for Youth _ grant. Dean‘s wife Linda acted as typist for the final printâ€" ed guide book which was published by the March of Dimes. Mr. Mellway said few buildings in the Kâ€"W area were classed as completely accessible for people in wheelchairs because of the stringent standards used in the survey. ‘‘"Our criteria was pretty stiff.â€" That‘s why we added a criteria listing some buildings as usable."" The buildings were judged by standards set down by the national housing code. However, these standards are not law in Ontario. In order to be classed as accessible, public buildâ€" ings had to have a parking area with a 12 foot parking spot â€" where â€" wheelchairs could be unloaded, a nonâ€" slip or ramped entrance with a width of 30 inches or greater, accessible aisles at least 38 inches apart, a five by five foot turning FOR HER:â€" Evening Gowns from °5 â€" Brides Maid Dresses from $§ FOR HIM :â€" Tuxedo Jackets in black, white and assorted colours. C Elevators were required to be at least 30 inches wide with a door timing of at least eight seconds and floor buttons no â€" higher than five feet. Handrails, an automatic door ‘return and a turning space of five feet were also required. To accommodate a wheelâ€" chair, washrooms had to have an entrance of 30 inches, grab bars, wash basins with a clearance of two feet, two inches, soap, taps, towels and plugs unâ€" der a height of 40 inches and mirror with a maximum height of three feet. * Although the standards were rigid, some public buildings in the Kâ€"W area passed with flying colors. Waterloo Pentecostal Tabâ€" ernacle was the only comâ€" pletely accessible church out of the 35 churches surâ€" veyed. In the recreational cateâ€" gory, Albert McCormick arena and Seagram Staâ€" dium in Waterloo were the only _ accessible arenas. The survey team found no accessible billiard halls or libraries. Waterloo Adult Recreation _ Centre _ was accessible to wheelchairs as was the Family "Y*" in Waterloo. No public theatres in the area were completely acâ€" cessible to â€" wheelchairs because of the strict washâ€" room requirements. University of Waterloo rated high comments from the survey team. _ ‘"Every major building has at least one principle entrance that is accessible to the disabled,"" reads the guidebook. Howéver, Wilfrid Laurier University was classed as having most major buildâ€" ings inaccessible. In the apartment and moâ€" tel category, every buildâ€" ing surveyed was classed as barely usable or inaccesâ€" sible. Shopping plazas, public ofâ€" Regional news and views / fice _ buildings, _ nursing homes and hospitals were mainly usable to accessiâ€" ble. Other categories of buildings that were surâ€" veyed were churches, culâ€" ture, sport and recreation centres, educational instituâ€" tions, government and busiâ€" ness offices, health and medical facilities, housing, merchandising â€" and _ serâ€" vices, restaurants and tavâ€" erns, shops, specialty stores and transportation facilities. > ‘The purpose of the survey was to provide disabled citizens with a guidebook listing accessible buildings they could use. ‘‘We achieved what we hoped to.
