Because of the recession, people are playing â€" economical sports. ‘"Horseshoe pitching is a very inexpensive sport ... In the North Waterloo League, it costs only $2 to play for a whole season," he said. "You don‘t have to have much equipment to play horseshoes. The shoes cost only $8 to $10 a set. The most expensive set you can buy is only $45 and they will last for four ‘or five years." Membership in the reâ€" gional association . costs 50 cents per member a year. In return for the membership fee, the assoâ€" ciation organizes competiâ€" tive tournaments for its members. Although it is only two years old, the association organized 12 tournaments this year. ‘"This is the greatâ€" est number we have ever had in this area," said Mr. Martin. ' A recent tournament at the Cambridge Fall Fair, attracted more than 100 competitors from the reâ€" gion and Southern Ontario. ‘"We were overjoyed at the response to the tournaâ€" ment," said Mr. Martin. "It was the biggest tournaâ€" ment by far that we‘ve organized in this area." The presence of the world champion â€" horseshoe â€" pitâ€" cher in the region has also spurred _ local _ interest says Mr. Martin. Elmer Hohl, who lives in Wellesâ€" ley, is a four time world champion. ‘"There is a terrific inâ€" terest in the sport because he lives here. . I remember playing shorseshoes with Bruno Toneguzzo of Gueiph was one of 100 horseshoe pitchers from the reâ€" gion and Southern Ontario who participated in a recent Waterloo Regional Horseshoe Association tournament at the Cambridge Fall Fair.
